I grew up behind the iron curtain in the 1970s in communist northern Canada with a black and white TV that you actually had to get up to change the channel on the knob. The knob had theoretically 13 channels but only 4 of them actually had anything on them.
One was the government propaganda channel, CBC, the other was CTV and then there was some sort of local channel and there was also something on channel 13, if memory serves, but it mostly looked like a snowstorm through the rabbit ears.

I rarely if ever watch 60 Minutes, as they have been kissing Obama’s ass since before he was elected in 2008. They are part of the left wing media and are now a joke when it comes to investigative journalism. Last night it came on after the football game I was watching and the opening story was about the infrastructure crisis in this country. I thought I’d give it a chance. After five minutes of propaganda, mistruths, false story lines and interviewing an ultimate insider hack lobbyist for corporate America, I turned on a more realistic truth telling show – The Simpsons.

Press and broadcast media, or “public information” was, called The Fourth Estate or fourth leg of the state, which itself can have an animal image, whether rabbit, elephant, cow or other. In Ancient Rome, the state was symbolized as a female wolf feeding the people with Capitolian milk.
As the fourth leg of the state, the press and media supposedly feeds the people with all that is right to know - and think - guarding intact and supporting all dominant social paradigms using selected information able to serve and defend the elite. The Fourth Estate was always considered suspect by freethinkers, radicals and the left.

In a highly predictable article slavishly supporting Israel's blitzkrieg in Gaza, but starting to have doubts about it, the 'Wall Street Journal', July 29, has the bare-faced audacity to tell its readers that the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr has been “tinged with sadness”. The Eid brought a brief lull in the fighting between Israel and Hamas “but instead of the customary feasting and celebration families were counting their dead and injured”. They were of course only “tinged” with sadness.

Overshadowing news of the BRICS summit of July 16 and Israel's ground offensive in Gaza on July 17, came breaking news that Malaysia Air flight MH17 crashed in Eastern Ukraine near the Russian border with 298 people on board of which 154 were nationals from the Netherlands. The flight originated in Amsterdam destined for Kuala Lumpur. While proof was not forthcoming about the cause of the accident during the day, media-induced speculation quickly emerged that it was shot down by either Ukrainian forces or by pro-Russian separatists in Eastern Ukraine. Within hours after the tragedy, U.S. media overtly alleged without substantiation Russian complicity. By evening, unidentified American intelligence and military officials said the plane had been destroyed by a Russian SA-series missile.

The well-known (to some) British academic George Saintsbury, Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature at several universities during his long career said that wine is like prosody and prosodic expression in the sense that steering away from the known to the unknown is always best. In English prosody and in rhetoric, from hymns to poems, speeches and other verbal communication based on written scripts Saintsbury stressed the role of spaces and voids, pauses, and unstated but implied ideas. Rhetoric of any kind, political or other, uses a similar tactic for example by arsis or raising and emphasising the voice either throughout the speech, or occasionally distorting or 'slipping' the pronounciation of a few key words or even a key slab of the written speech.

On what did it report? Well, on itself, and how alarmed it is due to its own increasing irrelevance in the face of new sources of information.
NYT is well-aware of the "New Media," as a 96-page internal report, sent to top executives last month, makes clear. Obtained by Buzzfeed, the report "paints a dark picture of a newsroom struggling more dramatically than is immediately visible to adjust to the digital world, a newsroom that is hampered primarily by its own storied culture."

This technology does not require interactive skills or critical thinking acumen. Just watch and fall into a daydream trance. TV is the stealth killer that penetrates 114.7 million American households. According to Nielsen, the 2012 Universe Estimate (UE), reflects a reduction in the estimated percent of U.S. homes with a television set (TV penetration), which declined to 96.7 percent from 98.9 percent. Should this turn down suggest promise or is it merely a result of internet substitution?
