Notice Savings Accounts Prosper as Interest Rates Rise to Seven-year High / Personal_Finance / Savings Accounts
As a method to entice new savers, providers have improved their notice accounts over the years, and the latest wave of activity has led to a rise, not just in the rates on offer for the top deals, but also to the average market rate. This is positive news for consumers looking to secure a decent return without locking in to a fixed rate bond.
Indeed, the latest analysis by Moneyfacts.co.uk shows that the average notice account rate has risen to 1.15%, the highest seen since October 2012 when it stood at 1.19%. The current top five notice account rates in the market have also improved, now paying 1.88% on average, up from 1.62% a year ago and 1.79% five years ago (based on a £10,000 deposit).

Getting Your Money Out For Retirement / Personal_Finance / Pensions & Retirement
We’re in the thick of the real estate game now. Our home is on the market, which means it’s much cleaner, and more spare, than usual. When we have showings, we vacate the premises, and of course need to take the dog. That’s more of a challenge than we’d thought, but she’s gotten used to sitting with us in the car at the nearby Sonic, and the crew on roller skates thinks she’s adorable. I hope they wash their hands after petting her.All of this comes out of our talks about where, and what kind of life, we should live. The house is fabulous, but big, and on open water in a flood prone area. With taxes and flood insurance moving higher, the cost of carry is on a one-way train uphill. In our early 50s, this looks like a good time to sell while there are still buyers for this sort of property.

The End of Risk-Free Retirement / Personal_Finance / Pensions & Retirement
In the last 150 years, we’ve had a number of innovations that radically changed the way we live.
You can tick off the list: electricity, the automobile, refrigeration, TV, the Internet. But one innovation rarely makes those lists. It is just as significant if not more so…
Retirement.
The idea that people can stop working in their fifties or sixties and then enjoy 20+ years of relative leisure is actually quite new.
For most of human history, most people worked as long as they were physically able to and died soon after.

UK Savers Lock in Cash to Beat Inflation Erosion / Personal_Finance / Savings Accounts
Savers looking to beat the eroding impact of inflation will find that fixed bond rates have risen in the past 12 months, so they can now get a better true return on their cash. Not only this, but easy access and notice account rates are also increasing, however none of the rates on offer in these sectors are currently able to beat inflation.
Despite the fact that inflation has now risen above the Government target of 2%, the latest research from Moneyfacts.co.uk shows that it still remains lower than the level seen in both May 2017, when the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) for April was announced at 2.7%, and May 2018 when inflation was 2.4%. Better still, savings rates have risen over both time periods.

Financial Independence Has Nothing to Do with Being a Millionaire / Personal_Finance / Money Saving
I am on Facebook, and there is a lot of crap on Facebook. Even the non-political crap is stuff I just do not believe in.
For example, people say that you should spend your money on experiences, not things. There is some spiritual component to this that I don’t get.
I like spending money on experiences (particularly travel), but I like spending money on things more. Clothes in particular.
You feel (and act) differently when you are wearing an expensive suit and an expensive pair of shoes. People who make $150,000 a year and still get all their clothes at Target do this not out of frugality, but low self-esteem.
It is good and right to spend money on yourself now and then.
The other crap you hear on Facebook, and pretty much everywhere else, is that money doesn’t make you happy.

Not Maxing Out Your 401(k) or IRA Contributions Is Stupid / Personal_Finance / Pensions & Retirement
Uncle Sam doesn’t give out too many freebies when it comes to tax time, except in the form of retirement plans.
Surprisingly, not many people take advantage of them. Only 41% of people contribute to a 401(k) when they have the option to do so.
A 401(k) allows annual contributions up to $19,000. If you maxed out your contributions, you could save thousands of dollars on your taxes.
Why do more people not contribute?

If You and Your Spouse Argue About Money, You Have to Read This / Personal_Finance / Pensions & Retirement
People fight about money all the time. It has been quantified. A third or more of all arguments in marriages are about money.Usually this falls into one of two categories:
- Spouse A thinks that Spouse B spends too much money.
- Spouse A thinks that Spouse B doesn’t spend enough money (i.e., is a CF).
I advocate for married couples to keep their money separate. My wife and I have always kept our money separate—for 21+ years. And it works great for us.

DIY Money Saving Magic with Wood Moisture Meter for DIY Repairs / Personal_Finance / Home Maintenance
Here's how a cheap moisture meter can save you a lot of time and money in DIY repairs. For instance we bought a cheap meter from Amazon for just £14 (https://amzn.to/2GZZnlA) to test the boards on a 10 year old decking so that we don't unnecessarily replace good boards, better to get the job all done in one go rather than having to revisit a few months later.
The Moisture meter has 4 sharp prongs, It basically works by sticking the prongs into wood and then gives a percentage moisture reading, anything over 20% means the woods likely rotting, most wood should read less than 20%. I tested it on a tree and it came back at 40%. The dry deck boards generally gave 0%-5% readings so were fine. 1 board that needed replacing underside was giving readings of over 30%!

Pension Funds Recover but Annuity Income Falls / Personal_Finance / Pensions & Retirement
New data from the latest Moneyfacts UK Personal Pension Trends Treasury Report has revealed mixed fortunes for the retirement sector during Q1 2019, with pension fund returns performing strongly but annuity rates declining.
Pension fund recovery
Pension funds endured a marked downturn in Q4 2018, with the average pension fund falling by 7.3%. As a result, in 2018 pension funds suffered their biggest losses since the 2008 financial crisis. However, performance-wise, pension funds have made a bright start to 2019. In Q1 2019, the average pension fund recovered much of last year’s lost ground by generating returns of 6.7% – the strongest quarterly pension fund performance since Q3 2016.
