Why Slumping Auto Sales May Not Say What You Think They Say / Companies / US Auto's

By: F_F_Wiley

July auto sales (released today and charted below) remained weak and should trigger a few recession forecasts. In fact, over the past few months we’ve read about half a dozen commentaries linking the recent plunge in auto sales to an imminent recession. And we understand the reasoning, but we’ve yet to buy into it.

We agree that car sellers face a degree of demand saturation while potential buyers suffer from credit saturation, or at least that’s what the data seem to show. We also agree that the saturation twins tend to be late-cycle indicators. But we’d like to add another possible explanation for slowing auto sales, one that yields a different conclusion about recession risks.

Baby Boomers Are Aging Quickly and Here’s How You Can Benefit / Companies / Demographics

By: Charles_Sizemore

If you’ve followed my writing for any length of time, you know how much respect I have for Harry and his demographic work.

Believe it or not, Harry, and his approach to forecasting, gave me the confidence to help launch Peak Income – an income newsletter – at a time when most investors were terrified of yield-focused investments.

The consensus two years ago was that inflation and higher bond yields were just around the corner, which would’ve meant a rough ride for the kind of investments I recommend.

Activist Investors Are Taking Over Wall Street, Procter and Gamble Might Never Remain the Same / Companies / Corporate News

By: Boris_Dzhingarov

In February, billionaire investor Nelson Peltz revealed that he had purchased a $3.5 billion stake in Procter & Gamble Co (NYSE:PG) through his investment firm, Trian Partners.  Wall Street suspected that the purchase was part of a grand strategy even though Mr. Peltz didn’t offer any proposals on making changes in the company. Market analysts surmised that the billionaire investor was bidding his time – now it seems that Peltz indeed had plans to make some changes at Procter & Gamble after all.

Biotech with Alzheimer's Focus Makes Progress on Several Fronts / Companies / BioTech

By: TLSReport

In its corporate update for Q2/17, a Canada-based biotech targeting neurological disorders including Alzheimer's disease informed investors of advancements in several programs, including designation of a second validated lead compound in development.

Among ProMIS Neurosciences Inc.'s (PMN:TSE) "key accomplishments" in the quarter, the company noted it expanded its potentially "best in class amyloid-beta (Aβ) portfolio for Alzheimer's disease," according to a July 10 news release. In its oral presentation, the company stressed its emphasis on the "best in class" goal, noting that even though Biogen Inc.'s (BIIB:NASDAQ) aducanumab will be "first in class" and is progressing well in development, the ProMIS compound could be more selective and possess greater patient benefits.

AAPL's 6% June slide - When Prices Are Falling, TWO Numbers Matter Most / Companies / Apple

By: EWI

On June 29, the Apple iPhone turned 10 years old. But, for many, the mood surrounding the milestone was less than celebratory. Reason being, in June alone, Apple Inc. (AAPL) plunged 6% to two-month lows amidst a broad-scale bruising of the global tech sector.

And so, the cursor on some Smartphone stock trading apps sits there -- blinking, blinking, blinking...

What's the next move? Is AAPL's 6% sell-off the start of a new downtrend. Or, will prices find a bottom and reclaim the upside?

A Former Lehman Brothers Trader: It’s Time To Buy Brick And Mortar Retailers / Companies / Retail Sector

By: John_Mauldin

BY JARED DILLIAN : Everyone thinks it is only a matter of time before Amazon puts every department store, every mall, every brick-and-mortar retailer out of business. Amazon gets an infinity market cap and everyone else gets zero.

Sound familiar?

That’s the accepted wisdom.

Is Amazon a great business? Yes.

Is a department store a bad business? Probably.

The Whole Foods And Amazon Merger Is A Sign Of The Major Trend Every Investor Should Be Aware Of / Companies / Mergers & Acquisitions

By: John_Mauldin

BY PATRICK WATSON : If you are a shareholder in either Amazon (AMZN) or Whole Foods Market (WFM), their combination ought to please you.

Both stocks rose on the merger news while the rest of the grocery industry dropped. But in the long run, I’m not sure their deal will work out well for any of us.

US Fed and Mainstream Media’s Moronic Statements On The Whole Foods Buyout / Companies / Corporate News

By: Jeff_Berwick

It’s already bad enough we live in a world overpopulated by idiots. Worse, they are often in charge of ‘the monetary system’ and even head up ‘the media’! Luckily for tomorrow, entrepreneurs are busy developing a decentralized crypto-monetary platform for a money that nobody can control, and an alternative media, of which we are part.

One recent article encompassed precisely the unnecessity of the stupidity of central bankers and their mainstream financial media lapdogs.

The Coming Battery Bonanza / Companies / Lithium

By: The_Energy_Report

James Dines, author of The Dines Letter, discusses the importance of graphite in the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries and highlights one graphite company he expects to have an edge.

Lithium Batteries for Autos and Home Storage

Someday, as sneaky years whisper past, batteries will be seen to have been a crucial wave of the investing future. Uses for lithium ion batteries (LIB) are expanding and will be the main technology for mobility and stationary storage for many years to come. LIB's have been improved over the last 25 years, but it might take that long for any new battery design to pass through the development process to ensure they are safe for consumer use. Electrification of vehicles and the storage of green energy is driving massive growth in LIB cell manufacturing, forecast to increase 170% from today's current capacity of 103 GwH to 278 GwH by 2021 to meet the demands of electrification of automotive vehicles. Also, lithium batteries will be used for stationary storage in houses; they would charge with wind or sunlight present, to be consumed later. Many will buy rooftop solar along with batteries. The 2015 world market value of lithium ion batteries was $18 billion and is forecast to double to $36 billion by 2025—which we personally believe will be much larger.

Overlooked Stock Investments To Keep An Eye On in 2017 / Companies / Investing 2017

By: Boris_Dzhingarov

The best returns in stock investment rarely come from the highly publicized companies. Fund managers are always looking for hidden or overlooked opportunities. This is exactly what we will talk about below. While many are focused on Donald Trump’s gold rally, companies that may or may not go public and defense industry predictions are just some of the areas where money is to be made. With that mind, here are some possible investments in overlooked stocks for 2017.

High Tech Is Born In War, Not Silicon Valley / Companies / Technology

By: John_Mauldin

BY GEORGE FRIEDMAN : Technology is a major foundation of national power. Technologies that define an era usually come from a major geopolitical power. Its uses are obvious.

For example, Roman engineering helped shape the Mediterranean world. British technology created and sustained the industrial revolution.

These empires could absorb the cost of innovation because they had the money to do so. They also knew it would only reinforce their power. And because technologies are meant to reinforce power, even the most benign were invented for military purposes.

Car Sales About To Go Over The Cliff / Companies / Auto Sector

The Retail Apocalypse.

Different industry.

And we called both decades ago!

Autos are the last splurge for aging Baby Boomers. Their kids leave the nest and finally the parents can buy the car they wanted, not that damned minivan to taxi kids around.

Is Amazon/Whole Foods Sign this Cycle’s AOL/Time Warner Party is Over? / Companies / Stock Market 2017

By: John_Rubino

Towards the end of the 1990s tech stock bubble, “new media” – i.e., the Internet — was ascendant and old media like magazines, newspapers and broadcast TV were yesterday’s news. This was reflected in relative stock valuations, which gave Internet pioneer AOL the ability to buy venerable media giant Time Warner for what looked (accurately in retrospect) like an insane amount of money.

Drones Upending Business Models and Reshaping Industry Landscapes / Companies / Drone Tech

By: The_Gold_Report

Rick Mills, editor of Ahead of the Herd, discusses how he sees drones upending business models and reshaping industry landscapes, including agriculture.

Economist Joseph Schumpeter introduced innovation economics in his 1942 book Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy. Schumpeter said that industries must incessantly revolutionize the economic structure from within by innovating with better or more effective processes and products.
