Big Oil, Big Headaches, and Big Opportunities / Companies / Oil Companies
Michael E. Lewitt writes: A three-day rally in crude prices last week is giving investors hope that the collapse in oil prices is over, and the market is reacting with strong moves to the upside in "Big Oil" stocks.
However, it may be too soon to draw either a correlation or conclusion; oil inventories and futures markets suggest that oil prices could easily head back down before stabilizing later this year (we saw a glimpse of this early Wednesday). The share price drops have significantly affected the "Oil Patch" sector, with the Energy Select SPDR ETF (NYSE Arca: XLE) down 26% since peaking at $100.93 on June 20, 2014.

The Only Way McDonald’s New CEO Can Turn Things Around / Companies / Corporate News
Keith Fitz-Gerald writes: Just over two months ago I unceremoniously kicked McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE:MCD) off my “buy” list noting that for the first time in more than 10 years that the company was no longer tapped into any of our globally “unstoppable trends.” Now, with the stock down another 7% since then, the Board has just kicked CEO Don Thompson off the menu, too.

This “Hydrogen Battery” Might Overcome Energy’s Biggest Roadblock / Companies / Energy Resources
Dr. Kent Moors writes: Hydrogen has always been an intriguing alternative energy source.
Pound for pound, it contains almost three times as much energy as natural gas, and when consumed, its only emission is pure, plain water.
The problem with this “miracle fuel” has always been the price.

Here’s Why Microsoft Stock Is Poised to Bounce Back / Companies / Microsoft
Michael A. Robinson writes: Last week’s second-quarter earnings report from Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) disappointed Wall Street and plenty of other investors – and they punished the company by slashing its share price by 10% in one day, on Jan. 26.
However, that just makes the Microsoft story – which I began two weeks ago – more interesting.

Michael A. Robinson writes: Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) just reported the biggest quarterly profit ever for a public company – $18 billion in net income over the last three months of 2014. And CEO Tim Cook says his company made a “staggering” number of iPhone sales during that time – 74.5 million.
And already a lot of folks in the media and on Wall Street are asking this question: What’s next?

Why Microsoft Stock Will Provide Major Investing Returns / Companies / Microsoft
Michael E. Lewitt writes: On January 26, software giant Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) announced a disappointing quarter that sent Microsoft stock reeling by 10% on three times its normal trading volume.
It was the second major technology "miss" Wall Street had to digest in the last week's time, coming after a disastrous earnings release by IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM).

Michael A. Robinson writes: Today is a good day to remind ourselves that we should always be in the stock market.
The markets remain the single best place to tap into the ongoing innovations in technology and the relentless growth that they create. And there are strategies we have at our disposal that we can use to safely capture some of that growth – and the wealth we all desire.
Today we’re going to head to the heart of the global auto industry to use Rule No. 3 – “Ride the unstoppable trends.” While we’re staying in the United States on this trip, we’re not traveling to Detroit.

IBM Stock Is Taking Yet Another Hit / Companies / Tech Stocks
Michael E. Lewitt writes: In late October, I warned investors to avoid International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) stock.
At that time, IBM stock was trading around $162 per share. Today it is trading at a shade under $158 per share, and could be heading much lower.
"Big Blue's" transition, or perhaps we can call it "turnaround," is at best stalling, and at worst, setting investors up for more disappointment as evidenced by its fourth-quarter (2014) earnings report.

Michael A. Robinson writes: Think back to last fall.
No other business story took up more column inches and more TV time than the Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (NYSE: BABA) initial public offering (IPO).
The Alibaba IPO remained the world’s top business story for months on end because of the immense amount of wealth it drew in and then created.

Target Stock Canada's Failure Threatens American Investors / Companies / Retail Sector
Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT) had one chance to make a good first impression in Canada… and blew it. And Target stock may soon feel the effects.

166 Trillion Reasons Why Bank Stocks Are So Cheap / Companies / Banking Stocks
Michael E. Lewitt writes: My continuing search for sectors of the stock market that are trading cheaply and offer the potential for gain has led me to a controversial slice of the market: bank stocks.
Looking at the "Big Four" in the U.S. banking sector, it's easy to conclude that the sector is undervalued…
But that conclusion may be a bit misleading.

Solar Power is at a Tipping Point (The Upshot is Massive Profits) / Companies / Solar Energy
Dr. Kent Moors writes: I have spent years tracking dozens of promising renewable energy companies.
And while the potential of these groundbreaking companies has always been tempting, there have always been limitations holding them back.
New projects require intensive amounts of working capital to make them fully compatible with traditional methods of generating power, and there’s the widely held assumption that renewables can’t survive absent government subsidies and benefits.

Legal “Steroids” Are Making This Tech Stock a “Buy” / Companies / Tech Stocks
Michael A. Robinson writes: Technology companies are a lot like major-league sports stars in that they often post their best results early in their careers.
Athletes’ bodies wear out, and they can compete at the highest levels for only so many years.
With high-tech corporations, however, the challenge isn’t age or health. It’s that there’s always a group of young start-ups with hot innovations breathing down the Old Guard’s necks.

UBS Fine - Nothing but a Limp Reprimand / Companies / Market Regulation
Shah Gilani writes: Policing Wall Street is hard work.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the undisputed top cop on the Street beat, has its work cut out for it. The enforcers at the SEC have to juggle what and whom they go after because, after all, they don’t have unlimited resources.

When a Trend Shifts Like This, Investors Can Get Rich / Companies / Investing 2015
Keith Fitz-Gerald writes: Did you see the investing opportunity in the Golden Globe Awards last Sunday?
Not many investors did. It was easy to miss.
It wasn’t the dazzling fashion on the red carpet or the celebrities congratulating each other. What really struck me was a huge signal for money-making in our Technology trend.

Why Renewable Energy Is Attracting the Smart Money / Companies / Renewable Energy
Dr. Kent Moors writes: While everyone's been fixated on oil, renewable energy has been gathering some serious steam.
Led by solar power, worldwide capital investment in "clean" energy surged by more than 16% last year.
In fact, spending on renewable energy was so strong in 2014, some have begun to label the recent rush into renewables as a "turning point" in the energy balance.

CAT to Follow Crude Oil Price to $40.00? / Companies / Company Chart Analysis
Is it reasonable to assume that so goes Crude Oil, so goes Caterpillar? Perhaps it is, or perhaps not, but the price charts of these two economic giants do show a fair degree of correlation.
Some Motley Fools I know think there may be some fundamental correlations as well.
Interestingly, both properties share downside price targets of $40.00 dollars. The major difference is that Crude is very much leading the way with a recent print low of $44.78 per barrel, which is not too far from our technical target.

Rough Week For Stock Bulls But No Thrust Down Yet.... / Companies / Stock Markets 2015
It wasn't a good week for the bulls, but if we look back on this market as to whenever it corrects, it seems about 5% is mostly the normal drop. That's just what we got from the top many weeks back at the old highs on the S&P 500. Basically, it was a one hundred point move lower, or 5%. Let's face it, that's not even selling when you think of the risk this environment holds based on all the troubles it's facing from horrific monthly charts to froth, etc. We had a major breakdown through the diagonals on all the key-index daily charts, but there has been absolutely no real follow-through to this point.
