The New Normal of Healthcare Spending / Companies / Healthcare Sector

By: John_Mauldin

A rather interesting shockwave came across the newsfeeds this week. I was actually doing a TV interview when the host announced that GDP was down 2.9% for the first quarter. There was not much else I could do but note that that was a really bad, ugly, terrible, not very good number. But I had no real basis, without any facts in front of me, by which to understand why the revision was so extreme. Sure, we were all expecting a pretty large revision, but what we got was the worst decline in five years and the largest downward revision since recordkeeping began. Later, a quick perusal of the data on the BLS website revealed the culprits: exports and healthcare spending.

How to Tap Big Profits in That "Other" Bioscience Niche / Companies / BioTech

By: Money_Morning

Ernie Tremblay writes: At first glance, it may seem like bioscience investing is so complicated and risky that it's hardly worth your time and money to invest, at least if you don't have someone knowledgeable to guide you.

And it's true. Putting your money behind new, experimental drugs, without some guidance, is a crapshoot.

But there's an approach to making profits from this sector that doesn't rely on breakthrough discoveries, expensive drug trials, or constant cash infusions through dilutive public offerings to fuel its engine.

Thomas Edison’s Dream Smashed / Companies / Technology

By: Casey_Research

By Adam J. Crawford, Analyst

The incandescent light bulb was invented in the very early 1800s, but at that time was a device too crude and impractical for mass adoption. Over the next 80 years, at least 20 inventors contributed to its improvement, until, in 1880, Thomas Edison developed and patented a bulb that would last a miraculous 1,200 hours. Edison’s product was the first to offer the levels of functionality, durability, and affordability necessary for widespread commercial appeal. That’s why he gets credit for inventing the light bulb, even though he was decades late to the party.

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Stock's Forgotten Muscle / Companies / Microsoft

By: Money_Morning

Michael A. Robinson writes: We've talked a lot about the importance of targeting growth stocks as a great way to become financially independent.

In fact, growth is one of the five rules that my tech-wealth-building strategy uses to identify the best profit opportunities.

But you can't ignore "value" stocks - especially since "special situation" plays such as corporate turnarounds can generate windfall gains for your portfolio.

AMD’s Transformation into an Entrepreneurial Growth Company / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Submissions

Vincent El Hayek writes: “AMD Shares Crushed on Weak Q3 Outlook; Analysts Fret about Inventory, Intel.” The headline, one of many articles that ran in 2012, spoke to the dismal future of the personal computer market. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) was founded in 1969, and was the largest supplier of CPUs for PCs. In 2006, AMD shares were as high as $41 and AMD was in the process of completing talks to acquire ATI Technologies (one of the largest semiconductor companies in America) for $5.4 billion. By 2012, AMD shares had fallen so low that they were trading below the $2 mark. At that point, the common belief was that they would soon be acquired or forced into bankruptcy. AMD had gone from being an industry leader, to a shell of its former self, with little market share. Ultimately, AMD was faced with a choice, they had to completely reinvent themselves, or they were going to fail.

By: Frank_Holmes

“Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology.”

Tesla Gigafactory Could Be Boon for Graphite, Lithium, Cobalt: Simon Moores / Companies / Graphene

By: The_Gold_Report

Tesla Motors makes the most sought-after electric cars in the world. Those cars run on advanced electric batteries and Tesla CEO Elon Musk wants to build them in America. Tesla has dubbed its $5-billion pet project, the "Gigafactory," and it could be up and running by 2017, prompting the need for battery-grade materials like graphite, lithium and cobalt. In this interview with The Gold Report, Simon Moores, manager of industrial minerals data with London-based Industrial Minerals, helps readers sort out the critical materials investors should keep an eye on.

How to Profit From the Iraq Crisis / Companies / Oil Companies

By: Investment_U

David Fessler writes: ISIS, the terrorist group that makes Al-Qaeda and the Taliban look like pussycats, has Iraq embroiled in an all-out civil war.

It's the largest security threat that Iraq has faced in years. Last week ISIS, in a surprise attack, took over the Iraqi city of Mosul, terrorizing its 2.8 million residents. More than 500,000 of them fled.

Five High-Yield Dividend Stocks That Will Make You Love the Tech Sector / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Money_Morning

Tara Clarke writes: Investors looking for high-yield dividend stocks have previously eschewed the tech sector, as that's traditionally been a place to invest for growth.

Instead of paying out extra cash to investors, tech high-fliers typically reinvest cash in research and development, mergers and acquisitions, and other classic "growth" strategies. That's why their earnings - and share prices - grow faster than average.

Not Even Washington's Meddling Could Stop Biotech’s Biggest Comeback / Companies / BioTech

By: Money_Morning

Michael A. Robinson writes: Late last month, I told you that biotech is one of the best ways to profit from the tech rebound. In fact, it was my “No Doz Opportunity No. 1.”

Somewhat ironically, a rollover in the biotech market was one of the proximate causes of the overall selloff in tech earlier this year.

And now I’m recommending that you invest in the company that purportedly “caused” the biotech market to roll over in the first place.

Solar Energy Sector ETF Breaking Out – How to Trade It / Companies / Solar Energy

By: Chris_Vermeulen

During the past couple months several indexes, sectors and commodities have sold off more than 10 – 20%. But now some are looking like new buying opportunities. Over the next week I will bring a few of these trades to your attention as they start to unfold.

Today we are looking at the TAN solar ETF. This sector recently had a 23% hair cut in price. A 20-25% correction in price is a typical intermediate correction for a fast moving sector. The price correction has pulled the sector down to its 150 and 200 simple day moving averages. These levels tend to act as long term support for investors, a buying point.

The Age of Transformation / Companies / Technology

By: John_Mauldin

One of the many luxuries that my readers have afforded me over the years is their willingness to allow me to explore a wide variety of topics. Not all writers are so blessed, and their output and responses to it tend to stay focused on specific, often quite narrow topics. While this approach allows them to dig very deep into particular subject matter, it can reduce the total scope of their research, vision, and advice. But don’t get me wrong; these types of letters are very important. I benefit greatly from being a subscriber to a number of letters that give me detailed analysis for which I simply don’t have the time to do the research. There’s just too much going on in the world today for any of us to be an expert in more than a few areas.

Airline Stocks – That Sinking Feeling / Companies / Sector Analysis

By: Submissions

Market Edge writes: First, an airplane simply vanished. The MH370 is yet to be found. The assumption is that it has crashed but no one has ever seen a wreckage which even remotely is linked to the plane.

Second, we have 13 planes that go off radar in Europe on June 5. No one knows why

Third, a Iraqi Warlord released by the US (for unknown reasons) is now capturing Baghdad and taking over Oil.

How to Profit from RadioShack’s Coming Demise / Companies / Internet

By: DailyGainsLetter

George Leong writes: Retail is tough, especially the bricks-and-mortar end (i.e. physical stores). Blockbuster and Circuit City are examples of two major companies that plummeted into the abyss after failing to recognize the strong moves long ago towards online shopping with the growing popularity and accessibility of the Internet, based on my stock analysis.
