Nuclear Fusion Power Breakthrough at the National Ignition Facility / Companies / Nuclear Power

By: Money_Morning

Dr. Kent Moors writes: An incredible breakthrough happened last week that took me back to my early fascination (and education) in theoretical physics.

It revolves around the most famous physics formula ever written: E=mc2.

As Einstein posited in his now famous 1905 paper, “Does the Inertia of an Object Depend upon Its Energy Content?” energy and mass are different forms of the same thing.

Why EBay, PayPal Split is a Bad Move / Companies / Corporate News

By: Bloomberg

John Donahoe, CEO of eBay, spoke with Bloomberg Television's Trish Regan and Matt Miller about investor Carl Icahn's proposal that the company's PayPal online payments unit be split off and EBay's competition and strategy.

On how eBay and PayPal can be most successful, Donahoe said: "I continue to believe the best way is together, that eBay makes PayPal stronger. And it makes PayPal stronger by helping it grow faster, it provides more data, and it provides a strong financial foundation that will ultimately make PayPal more successful as part of eBay than separate."

You probably do know the biggest banks in the world have commodities businesses.

Those lines of business might include trading desks (trading everything from gold and copper to kilowatts), transportation (pipelines, railcars and tankers) and storage (warehousing) operations, mining operations, as well as production, refining, and raw and finished commodity distribution operations.

The “Secret Ingredient” that Generates Solar Power at Night! / Companies / Solar Energy

By: Money_Morning

Dr. Kent Moors writes: As solar power enthusiasts know all too well, renewable energy has the same problem that the “normal” generation of electricity does.

It’s how to store all of the energy produced so that it can be used when it’s needed. For solar power, that means even at night.

Why Wall Street Would Love to Bug Our Phones / Companies / Investing 2014

By: Money_Morning

William Patalon writes: Every month or so, Keith Fitz-Gerald, Shah Gilani or a few of the other editors here at Money Map Press will wonder aloud if the big Wall Street investment banks have secreted a bunch of listening-device "bugs" in our offices or on our phones.

They haven't, of course. And our comments were made in jest - and meant only as a joke.
But the coincidences that prompt these surveillance-by-Big-Brother quips can be quite remarkable.

Top-Yielding Dividend Stocks to Combat Low Interest Rates / Companies / Dividends

By: DailyGainsLetter

John Paul Whitefoot writes: Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen has confirmed what most already knew. The recovery in the U.S. jobs market is far from complete. Yellen noted that the unemployment rate has improved since the Federal Reserve initiated its last round of quantitative easing in late 2012, falling from 8.1% to 6.6%. Curiously, in 2013, the U.S. economy grew just two percent.

Where to Find the Best Stock Investing Opportunities in Emerging Markets / Companies / China Stocks

By: DailyGainsLetter

Mohammad Zulfiqar writes: There are a significant number of concerns regarding the emerging markets at this time. Investors are asking if emerging market stocks are a good buy right now; are the troubles over or are there still more to come?

As it stands, it seems further troubles are brewing in the emerging markets, as the Federal Reserve tapers its quantitative easing program. We have seen currencies in countries like Turkey, South Africa, Russia, and Argentina decline significantly.

Why I Love Amazon.com but Won’t Buy Its Stock / Companies / Internet

By: Vitaliy_Katsenelson

You should look at your portfolio and want to throw up a little — this is how one value manager described what a true, die-hard value investor’s portfolio should look like. The two stocks I wrote about in my latest article — American Eagle and Aéropostale — have a tendency to elicit that unpleasant reflex in many investors today.

Where Stock Investors Can Find Stability in These Economically Unstable Times / Companies / Investing 2014

By: DailyGainsLetter

John Paul Whitefoot writes: While most astute investors would point to a weak U.S. economy as the reason for the recent lackluster U.S. employment data, economists, in their infinite wisdom, point to Mother Nature. She seems to shoulder a lot of the economic blame in this country.

How to Profit from the Dow’s “Dogs” / Companies / Investing 2014

By: DailyGainsLetter

George Leong writes: Small-cap stocks are faring the worst this year and are down nearly 10% from their record-high in late 2013; many would deem this to be an official stock market correction.

Given that small-cap stocks surged upward by more than 33% in 2013, it shouldn’t be a surprise to see this group get the brunt of the selling this year.

US Global Defensive Consumer Franchises Stock Investing Theme / Companies / Sector Analysis

By: Rory_Gillen

Having your cake and eating it too!

Sometimes you can have your cake and eat it! In investing that means buying stocks with good defensive growth characteristics. In May 2010, GillenMarkets introduced the US Global Defensive Consumer Franchise Theme for subscribers and the theme included eight US companies at that time—Coca Cola, McDonalds, Proctor & Gamble, Colgate, Johnson & Johnson, Wal-Mart, Kellogg and Kraft. The European equivalents—Unilever, Diageo, Reckitt Benckiser and Kerry—were added to the theme in 2011. Kraft has since de-merged and we have substituted Mondelez (the spin off from Kraft) in Kraft's place.

Apple, Ebay and Visa - Stocks to Watch as Activist Investors Unlock Value / Companies / Investing 2014

By: DailyGainsLetter

Sasha Cekerevac writes: One of the most hotly debated topics these days is the role of activist investors. Some people have the impression that an activist investor is not a positive factor when it comes to long-term investing. I disagree, as many times, the investment strategy recommended by these activist investors ends up benefiting all shareholders.

We Just Found The New King Of The Computer Industry / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Money_Morning

Michael A. Robinson writes: During the Depression-ridden 1930s, with the United States circling the financial abyss, an American industrialist named Thomas J. Watson Jr. gambled the future of his business-equipment company on an expansion plan that included wholesale hiring, investments in technology, and the construction of new factories.

For six years, Watson had his factories at full bore – churning out tabulating equipment there were no buyers for. But he believed in his plan and stayed with his strategy.

China Tech Stocks - The Hottest Investment Market on Earth / Companies / China Stocks

By: Money_Morning

Michael A. Robinson writes: China has been dominating the headlines in recent days... And not in a good way.

Since late last week, worries about slowing growth, financial-system shenanigans, and the potential for an "Asian Contagion" type spillover have whacked global stocks - and have left folks wondering if the Chinese Miracle is over.

But China's kind of like a still-young tech venture: There are going to be reversals, it's going to be volatile, and it's normal to expect this kind of whipsaw market action.

Business Development Companies Investing / Companies / Investing 2014

By: Casey_Research

By Andrey Dashkov

Business Development Companies (BDCs) are publicly traded private debt and equity funds. I know that description isn’t terribly sexy, but keep reading and you’ll find there’s a lot to be excited about.

BDCs provide financing to firms too small to seek traditional bank financing or to do an IPO, but at the same time are too advanced to interest the earliest-stage venture capitalist. These companies are often near or at profitability and just need extra cash to reach the next milestone. Filling this void, BDCs provide funds to target companies in exchange for interest payments and/or an equity stake.
