Stock Market Closed Near the Highs for the Day

The stock market indices started the week off with an up-session, closing near the highs for the day going away. The day started out with a move up to resistance, a sharp pullback that held support, and then they rallied to midday, consolidated until the last thirty minutes when they surged slightly, and finished near the highs.


Net on the day, the Dow was up 46.16 at 18,538.12. The S&P 500 was up 6.50 at 2186.48. The Nasdaq 100 had a strong day, up 30.77 at 4829.51.

Advance-declines were 17 to 12 positive on the New York Stock Exchange, and 15 to 13 positive on the Nasdaq. Up/down volume was 2 to 1 positive on New York, total volume of 3.3 billion shares traded. The Nasdaq traded 1 3/4 billion shares and had a 10 to 7 positive volume ratio.

TheTechTrader.com board was led by several Nasdaq Generals. Priceline.com (PCLN) was up 14.11 to 1436.96, Google Inc. (GOOG) up 8.62 to 780.08, Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN), a new all-time high, 16.43 to 788.87, Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) 2.71 to 100.09, but Apple Inc. (AAPL) was down 5 cents to 107.68.

Baidu, Inc. (BIDU) ran 11.54 to 189.32, Facebook, Inc. (FB) gained 3.22 to 129.73, and First Solar, Inc. (FSLR) popped 80 cents to 38.98.

Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA) jumped 5.05 to 202.83.

Acacia Communications, Inc. (ACIA) was up 10.30 to 123.44, Ambarella Inc. (AMBA) up 1.89 to 68.88, Accelerate Diagnostics, Inc. (AXDX), one of our swing trades, up 1.51 to 23.60, Twilio, Inc. (TWLO) 1.56 to 59.18.

The Direxion Daily S&P Biotech Bull 3X ETF (LABU) ran 2.88 to 40.28.

On the downside, there were only fractional losers. Nothing more than a few cents.

Checking TheTechTrader.com percent-gain leaderboard, SemiLEDs Corporation (LEDS) advanced 94 cents, or 15%, to 7.35, on 1.3 million shares traded. Zynerba Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (ZYNE) bounced 98 cents, or 12%, to 9.45. Xinyuan Real Estate Co., Ltd. (XIN), a day trade of ours, up 78 cents, or 13%, to 6.93, on 1.5 million shares traded.

CoLucid Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (CLCD), on positive drug news, jumped 13.17, or 124%, to 23.83, on 14 million shares traded, 49,000% more volume than average. Navistar International Corporation (NAV), on an equity investment, gained 5.72, or 41%, to 19.79, on 16.5 million shares traded. Dynavax Technologies Corporation (DVAX) climbed 3.09, or 28%, to 14.00, on 10.7 million shares traded. LeMaitre Vascular, Inc. (LMAT) climbed 2.45, or 13%, to 20.80.

Gold had a great day today. The Direxion Daily Jr Gold Miners Bull 3X ETF (JNUG) popped 4.27, or 20%, to 25.64, on 15.6 million shares traded.

Silver also had a big day, Silver Wheaton Corp. (SLW) was up 1.43, or 5.2%, to 28.87, on 7.3 million shares traded.

Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, after moving up sharply, the indices came down sharply, but held support. The rest of the day they rallied, except in the afternoon when they consolidated, but held until the late rally ensued, closing near the highs for the day.
