FCA to Introduce a Price Cap to be Introduced on Rent-to-own Goods / Personal_Finance / Shopping

By: Submissions

The Financial Conduct Authority will be introducing a price cap on rent-to-own goods from April 1st this year. The FCA are hoping that the price cap will save consumers in the UK around £22.7 million every year on the cost of products that are of everyday use such as fridges, cookers and televisions.

According to reports, in certain cases, consumers of rent-to-own goods are currently paying in total around 4 times more than the price of the good itself. The FCA hope to introduce the price cap to ensure that credit charges are unable to be more than the cost of the product itself. As well as the price cap, firms will have to benchmark their prices, such as delivery and installation, against the prices that are charged by three mainstream retailers. This benchmark will prevent firms from significantly rising their prices to get back the profits that they may lost from the cap on their prices.

As was our experience on our last trip to Turkey, specifically to visit the giant open air market at Fethiye where virtually every good was on show at knock down prices, this even before we attempted to negotiate the price down.

In this video we buy and test a Beats headphone for £15 (UK price £120), and a Karaoke Mike for £10 (£50 UK price). Of course we tested to make sure they worked at the time of purchase which they did, but are they the same, similar and most importantly do they LAST! Do they still work several months later, find out as we answer the question do you actually save money by buying knock off goods or not.

Doritos Meltdown as Super Markets (Tesco) Say No to Voucher Winners / ConsumerWatch / Shopping

By: N_Walayat

The Doritos instant win promotion that began Mid February and due to end Mid April has proved to have a high probability for a win that we currently estimate at 40%, i.e. 4 out of every 10 packets will be a winner! Just enter the code on the back of the Doritos packets at the website and you will instantly know if you have won cash from £5 to £500 or a print at home voucher for free packet of Doritos which is what you are most likely to win.

Unfortunately, for winners there is a fly in the ointment in that supermarkets such as Tesco are increasingly refusing to accept any more than 1 voucher per customer PER DAY (worth upto 80p) in exchange for a free packet of Doritos as has been our recent experience at Tesco, Sheffield.
