Investing and the Passive Management Bubble / Companies / Investing 2014

By: Michael_Pento

We have happened upon that time in the investment cycle when investors vastly eschew active management of their assets in favor of a more passive management style. In fact, I read recently 461 Hedge Funds, a hallmark of active investment management, shut their doors in the first half of this year alone. If liquidations continue at that rate, they'll outpace the 1,023-closure record from 2009. All signs now indicate that active management has fallen out of vogue.

Buy Fear - Easily Pick Up Profits on Stock Market Dips / Companies / Investing 2014

By: Money_Morning

Michael A. Robinson writes: U.S. stocks are hitting record highs on an almost-daily basis as we close in on the end of the year.

But the whipsawing we've had to endure to reach this point is enough to give you saddle sores.

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index has gained a healthy 11.6% in 2014 through the closing bell on Friday. From Sept. 18 to Oct. 15, however, the bellwether index fell 7.4%. The downturn ended quickly, and stocks reversed course. In the month that followed, through Nov. 14, the S&P 500 surged 9.5%.

China's Picked a Loser, and It Will Surprise You / Companies / Investing 2014

By: Money_Morning

Earlier this year we discussed how Canada was aiming to host the first Chinese currency hub in the Americas.

Well now it's official, with Canada's financial capital, Toronto, the chosen winner.

With so much international business still transacted in U.S. dollars, China's central bank, like most others, holds dollars in reserve, or buys them as needed.

The "Financial Mass Destruction" Investing Play Is All Upside / Companies / Investing 2014

By: Money_Morning

Peter Krauth writes: While Russia fights for Eastern Ukraine, for now, it's losing the currency war.

Thanks to a perfect storm of low oil prices, economic sanctions put in place in response to the crises in Ukraine, and capital flight, Russia's been forced to capitulate by abandoning its currency peg.

It's all reminiscent of the financial attacks on Iran and its currency.

When You Know a Company Cares: 3 Keys to Investing in a Bull Market / Companies / Investing 2014

By: Submissions

Chad Shoop writes: U.S. stocks are still very much in a bull market — just one with increasing volatility. In October, stocks suffered the sharpest drop since 2011, and then rebounded just as rapidly to close the month at, or near, all-time highs. It only leaves you guessing what the markets will do next.

When the market is sitting at an all-time high, people are skeptical to purchase shares of a company. They think it’s bad investing, when all it really means is you just have to be extra careful about what you choose to invest in.

Petrobas Plunge - A Timeless Lesson on Investing With the Government / Companies / Investing 2014

By: DailyWealth

Brian Hunt writes: Sometime in the past decade, Americans who should know better embraced a horrible investment idea...

If you've ever bought a stock because an investment guru told you it was "state owned" and backed by the government, chances are good you fell for a common mistake... And chances are good you lost money on the deal.

Central Bank Intervention or Real Economic Growth? / Companies / Investing 2014

By: Money_Morning

Michael E. Lewitt writes: That was quick!

Shrugging aside concerns that a week ago sent markets reeling to near correction territory, all major indices bounced back strongly this week and made it seem as though the October 15 panic never happened….

Get Ready for “Stupid Cheap” Stock Prices / Companies / Investing 2014

By: Money_Morning

Michael A. Robinson: “This is huge. It’s ka-boom!”

That was my then-boss calling me from Wall Street. At the time, I was an analyst in the Financial District in San Francisco.

It was Oct. 19, 1987 – Black Monday – and the stock market had just crashed.

Stocks Got Their Piece – Now It’s Our Turn / Companies / Investing 2014

By: Money_Morning

Michael A. Robinson writes: This morning’s 600-point neck-breaking swing in the Dow Jones Industrial Average only added to the pain of the big sell-off over the past week and a half.

And in our realm of tech, chip stocks came under especially hard pressure after the CEO of Microchip Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MCHP) said that “another industry correction has begun.”

But you shouldn’t be joining the crowd and dumping stocks at this point.

The Safest Stocks in the World / Companies / Investing 2014

By: DailyWealth

Amber Lee Mason writes: The market is teaching investors a timeless lesson...

It's one longtime DailyWealth readers should already know.

Selling the basics works.

"The basics" are products that the average consumer can't or won't live without... that have tremendous brand loyalty... and that don't break the bank. Things like soda, cigarettes, and soap.

Bill Ackman: I'm not a Crybaby Shareholder / Companies / Investing 2014

By: Bloomberg

In an interview with Bloomberg's Hans Nichols from the Euronext Amsterdam, Pershing Square Holdings Founder and CEO Bill Ackman said, he's preparing to buy a 'decent-sized stake' in a U.S. based company, "The cash that we've raised we intend to use for a new commitment. So we have a new investment we're going to announce probably in the next 45-60 days, and the capital will go for that new investment."

Ackman told Nichols that Pershing Square can exist and do well without him," I'm not planning on going anywhere. But we've actually built Pershing Square Holdings with a key man provision that says if I were to disappear, then shareholders could elect -- would have vote to continue the entity and I think that vote would be a favorable vote. It's been a very good, it's been a good place to have capital for the past 11 years."

Bet you sold Apple and Google a long time ago / Companies / Investing 2014

By: John_Mauldin

My good friend Barry Ritholtz, famous for launching The Big Picture blog (and since graduating to being a regular Bloomberg columnist as well as writing a weekly column for the Washington Post), is well-known for being a contrarian. Barry is a regular dinner partner when I get to New York, and he also participates in the annual Maine fishing trip. We frequently trade information … and barbs. The word colorful affectionately comes to mind when I think of Barry (and maybe opinionated would work).

Nervous Investors Will Hate the Money You Make With This Strategy / Companies / Investing 2014

By: Money_Morning

Michael A. Robinson writes: In the past couple of weeks, we’ve been seeingrecord highs in the markets nearly every day.

However, we saw a pretty scary headline earlier this week about the Nasdaq Composite Index.

On Monday, Bloomberg reported that nearly half of the stocks in the tech-centric Nasdaq have declined 20% from their highs of the past 12 months – putting them in “bear territory.”

Stock Market Investing - Don't Let Media "Noise" Drown Out True Value / Companies / Investing 2014

By: Money_Morning

Michael E. Lewitt writes: Signs of overvaluation and "irrational exuberance" abound in the market, and not surprisingly it is most often seen in the run-up of stocks with which we have daily familiarity.

We hear incessantly of Facebook Inc. (Nasdaq: FB) and Twitter Inc. (NYSE: TWTR) - when not checking them ourselves.

A Better Way to Play Tesla’s Success in China / Companies / Investing 2014

By: Money_Morning

Michael A. Robinson writes: Tesla Motors Inc. stock hit a new high on Aug. 29 thanks to very positive news out of China.

The world leader in electric vehicles is set to install 400 charging stations in roughly 120 Chinese cities. And that’s on top of 200 charging stations Tesla already operates in the world’s most populous nation.

The news comes just weeks after Tesla began selling its luxurious $70,000 Model S in China.

A Major Move in Venezuela Lands Me Back on Chinese TV / Companies / Investing 2014

By: Money_Morning

Dr. Kent Moors writes: Sometimes my TV appearances happen on very short notice. Like the one yesterday, for example.

Twelve minutes into my routine at LA Fitness, my phone rang. Chinese television wanted to do a segment ASAP.

So I rushed back home for a quick shower, a change of clothes and a limousine ride to the studio in downtown Pittsburgh.

How to Score Massive Profits From the Russia-China Energy Deal / Companies / Investing 2014

By: Money_Morning

Michael A. Robinson writes: You’ve probably already heard about the new natural gas pact between Russia and China. In the deal, China promises to buy Russian natural gas worth roughly $400 billion over the next 30 years.

Most investment analysts are busy pointing out the obvious – that this is good for Russia’s energy sector. And maybe some of you are fuming about what this might mean for the U.S. economy and its natural gas segment.

The Underpants Gnomes Business Plan / Companies / Investing 2014

By: John_Mauldin

By Grant Williams

This week’s TTMYGH will be a little shorter than usual (“Thank heavens!” I hear you cry) owing to my presence at the Strategic Investment Conference 2014 this past week and the travel time to and fro.

Due to the hectic schedule and the fact that there were so many interesting people in attendance, I had planned to spend my week dragging as much knowledge as I possibly could out of those who made the trip to San Diego rather than committing finger to keyboard; but a chance encounter with a delightful young lady initiated an engaging conversation which, in turn, led to my discovery of the Underpants Gnomes.
