Sheffield Hanover Tower Cladding Nightmare as Costs Spiral Out of Control

Local / Sheffield Jun 30, 2017 - 06:31 AM GMT

Local

The Broomhall Hanover flats tower are Sheffield's first tower blocks to fail urgent fire safety tests in the wake of the Grenfell Tower Fire disaster that prompted the city council to in a panic announce the removal of all of the substandard cladding from Hanover Tower, work on which began earlier this week, starting with two sides of the tower blocks cordoned off.

However the latest noise out of the City Council is that the bill for recladding Hanover Tower alone could cost over £1 million! A disaster for Sheffield's council tax payers, especially as this may literally represent just the tip of Sheffield's cladded tower blocks nightmare that could soon expand to more than 20!

Whilst costs spiral out of control, the actual work appears to be going at a snails pace as the below photo illustrates after 1 whole days work, which implies it could take the contractors several months rather than the 2 to 3 weeks that the mainstream press such as Look North have been reporting.

So apparently those in charge of Sheffield City Council housing department are not knowledgeable enough to recognise the difference between cheap combustible cladding and fire retardant safe cladding. Even worse it appears the council paid for slightly thicker 3mm cladding whilst cheaper 2mm cladding was fitted. After all who would notice the difference? Sheffield City Council didn't! Which once more demonstrates that Sheffield City Council is not really fit for purpose! Special measures?

The Hanover tower represents the tip of Sheffield's cladding disaster ice-berg as the number could easily expand to more than 20 Sheffield city council tower blocks having their cladding removed exposing the insulation to the elements and as everyone well knows once insulation gets wet it is pretty much becomes useless. And then we have the other 80 or so private tower blocks to consider.

For more Sheffield's tower blocks that could soon be due for emergency removal of cladding (though at a snails pace), then see my recent video:

Are Sheffield's High Rise Tower Blocks Safe?

Nationally so far of the 150 tower blocks have been tested all of which have failed fire safety tests with at least another 500 tower blocks to be tested, which means as many as 20 Sheffield tower blocks could fail cladding fire safety tests.
