FEAR TRADE: Metals Up, Stocks and Jobs Down / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: MoneyMetals

Clint Siegner writes: Precious metals have risen sharply in recent days as investors looked for alternatives to the stock market and U.S. dollar. Both gold and silver pushed through important technical resistance levels. Metals bulls hope to see markets enter a virtuous cycle; improving charts followed by more speculative long interest leading to improved charts.

Gold vs Stocks Macro Changes / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: Gary_Tanashian

A picture is worth 4-plus years and thousands of words, and the picture below has a lot to say. I'll say some words as well, since I have kept them bottled up for years in an effort to make sure we operate with discipline as opposed to gold bug style emotion.

The bear market and subsequent inflation-fueled credit bubble early last decade was when I first started paying close attention to macro markets (as opposed to stock trading, which I had done for a few years prior) and how they operate. Having seen well paid professionals lose half of my IRA in 2002, I took over all of our finances and never looked back. But I needed to understand how markets worked and that has been a challenging and rewarding endeavor, not to mention an ongoing learning experience.

The Davos Confetti Club / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: Michael_Pento

The Keynesian elite gathered in Davos Switzerland this past week to pontificate on global economic issues and to strategize the engineering of The Fourth Industrial Revolution. This new so called “revolution” includes a discussion on the future of Artificial Intelligence. Judging by the comments coming from most of the list of attendees, it seems obvious the intelligence on display was indeed faux. But the most important take away from this venue was that central bankers have made it clear to the markets that the level and duration of quantitative counterfeiting knows no bounds.

More Stock Market, Gold Selling Next Week? / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: Brad_Gudgeon

The SPX should hold about 1943/44 Monday and then drop to around 1850 by Feb 3 or 4. The astro/fib CIT turns are Feb 1 and Feb 4. There is a Bradley turn due Feb 3-5. The 16 TD low is due Feb 3.

Astro-wise we have Venus conj Pluto as it translates the Uranus/Pluto square Feb 5-6. Mercury translates this same pair Jan 30/31. Normally, the stock market makes it low before the Venus Pluto conjunction suggesting Feb 3 to 4 for the low. This would agree more with the astro/fib turns, however, a bit of a stretch for the 16 TD low to meld with the 5 week low on Feb 25 if the low comes on the 4th, but not impossible.

As Goes January, So Goes the Year... / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: Jesse

And so we say goodby to January 2016.

There is an old saying on Wall Street that as goes January, so goes the year. This is also known in some circles as the 'January barometer.'

If this is the case it is going to be a good year for precious metals and a very wild ride for stocks.

Market Friendly BoJ Action Means more Unfriendly CNY Devaluation / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: Ashraf_Laidi

The BoJ's decision to cut the interest rate on current account balances to -0.10% highlights the beginning of the end of Japan's asset purchase program due to insufficient bonds held by banks, pension funds and insurance companies.

The fact that the BoJ voted 5-4 in favour of negative rates and 8-1 to keep monthly assets purchases unchanged exposes the controversial nature of the decision to re-enter negative rates and the unfeasibility of adding fresh QE.

Clueless in Davos / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: Peter_Schiff

Making their annual pilgrimage to the exclusive Swiss ski sanctuary of Davos last week, the world's political and financial elite once again gathered without having had the slightest idea of what was going on in the outside world. It appears that few of the attendees, if any, had any advance warning that 2016 would dawn with a global financial meltdown. The Dow Jones Industrials posted the worst 10 day start to a calendar year ever, and as of the market close of January 25, the Index is down almost 9% year-to-date, putting it squarely on track for the worst January ever. But now that the trouble that few of the international power posse had foreseen has descended, the ideas on how to deal with the crisis were harder to find in Davos than an $8.99 all-you-can-eat lunch buffet, with a free cocktail.

Stock Market Bounce, But No Overlap / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: Anthony_Cherniawski

Good Morning!

SPX bounced in the Premarket, but did not overlap, which is a condition of a declining impulse. Confirmation of that would be

Evident only after the open. A gap down open would suggest Wave 3 may be underway.

Lifting Sanctions on Iran a Mixed Bag / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: John_Browne

From a financial perspective, the New Year has been anything but happy. As of January 20th, the S&P had fallen over 9% since the beginning of the year, to levels not seen since 2014,reflecting a loss of some $2 trillion in market value. Compounding matters was the 30% collapse in oil prices, which brought crude down to the lowest levels in 13 years. The New Year has also seen further evidence of recession in the U.S., which has appeared in a string of bad manufacturing service sector data.

Money Mind Games, Futures, and the Future / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: Doug_Wakefield

“In markets, usually when you see massive buying and selling and people piling into trades, it is time to step back, get some perspective, and let the move play out before jumping in or out one way or the other. As we know, trades can get very crowded and almost too tempting to resist.” – Mind, Money & Markets, Dr. Janice Dorn, pg 47

“Reaction to the FOMC news was instant. Within a thousandth of a second, the move was already over. Trades in 8,000 NMS stocks. Nothing to buy after a few milliseconds.” – Buy All The Stocks Now!, Nanex Research, Sept 18, 2013

Square Holes and Currency Pegs / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: Raul_I_Meijer

When David Bowie died, everybody, in what they wrote and said, seemed to feel they owned him, and owned his death, even if they hadn’t thought about him, or listened to him, for years. In the same vein, though the Automatic Earth has been talking about deflation (for 8 years, it’s our anniversary today) and the looming China Ponzi disaster for a long time, now that these things actually play out, everybody talks as if they own the story, and present it as new (because, for one thing, well, after all for them it is new…).

Investors "Think About How to Mitigate Your Losses" / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: Gordon_T_Long

FRA Co-Founder Gordon T. Long deliberates with Eric Sprott about the outlook for the global economy in 2016. Eric Sprott is a Canadian hedge fund manager and founder of Sprott Asset Management. He became a billionaire on paper with the initial public offering of Sprott Inc, the parent of his Sprott Asset Management firm. In August 2011, Sprott was acknowledged by Bloomberg as a 'hidden billionaire.' The publication estimated Sprott's worth at $1.3 billion, largely based on his publicly disclosed holdings in Sprott Inc. and Sprott Physical Gold Trust. Sprott started his career as an analyst at Merrill Lynch covering everything but commodities. He eventually became known as a natural-resources and energy investor.

CIPS, Not The Petrodollar Is Key / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: Raymond_Matison

With oil prices having declined to record lows of the last several decades and financial markets having traded down dramatically, there is increased interest in identifying the next possible black swan event.

Over the last several years, there have been scores of articles forecasting a fall of the Petrodollar as the key confirming event for the long-expected decline in value of the United States dollar currency and the demise of its global hegemony.  These reports are correct in that unraveling the Petrodollar will precipitate a sudden decline in global demand for the dollar, with a concomitant decline in the value of the dollar in global currency markets.

A Huge Gap Down Awaits the Stock Market / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: Anthony_Cherniawski

Good Morning!

SPX appears to have crossed beneath its neckline and may be challenging its September 29 low at 1871.91. A fall beneath the August 24 low at 1867.01 may release a barrage of sell orders, driving the SPX to the final support level at 1820.66 made on October 15, 2014.

Whether intentional or not, this may trap a lot of bulls in a very dicey proposition. Hoping for a bottom today is not a viable strategy. Today’s outcome was amply suggested yesterday by the Hi-Lo Index, which closed very near the bottom of its range at -698.00.

Market Forecasts 2016: An About-Face for the Fed and Gold / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: Peter_Schiff

Synopsis: The Federal Reserve's December interest rate hike was actually the end of the Fed's tightening cycle that began with the first taper talk several years ago. The Fed will be forced to restart QE and lower interest rates again (maybe even into negative territory) when it becomes clear the US economy is sliding back into recession. When that happens, investors who have been selling gold on expectations of economic health will have to reverse their bets and begin buying as gold rallies.

Stock Market Retracement is Already Underway / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: Anthony_Cherniawski

Good Morning!

SPX Premarket is higher by 18 points at present. However, it had declined in the overnight futures to the cash equivalent of 2006.00, then rallied higher from there, fulfilling the requirement for Wave b and launching Wave c.

The current price at 2043.60 is only the Fibonacci 23.6% level. As mentioned yesterday, 1970.03 (at the same level as the 4.25-year trendline) is the 38.2% retracement level.

My New Year's Resolution: Don't Confuse Debt with Wealth / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2016

By: MoneyMetals

Guy Christopher writes: If you don't have a magical crystal ball to see the future, then a good history book will do the job. Understanding the past offers a full color panorama to the dangers and opportunities facing you in 2016.

Unpayable debt is becoming the Big Story of the 21st Century across the globe. Life-altering disruptions will be the norm, with little that mankind has not seen before.
