Banana Plant Flowers and Fruits in Sheffield, Yorkshire UK For First Time in 5 years / Personal_Finance / Gardening

Finally, and completely unexpectedly our Basjoo Banana plants have started to flower and fruit! The other day (25th July) we noticed that a new emerging leaf did not look quite right, instead we had the beginnings of a fruiting flower, and barely a 6 days on we noticed that another banana plant in a seperate container was ALSO showing signs of flowering! This was a big surprise, for the earliest we have seen banana plants fruit in Yorkshire was after 9 years of growth! As appeared on BBC Look North last year, so we are 4 years ahead of the fruiting banana tree curve!

UK Savings Market Recovery Weakened by Bank of England Lending Schemes / Personal_Finance / Saving Bonds

The latest data from moneyfacts.co.uk reveals that the savings market has now had seven consecutive months wherein rate rises have outweighed cuts, with July seeing 151 rises versus 45 cuts.

Fixed rate bonds are continuing to play a huge part in the recovery of the market, with 60% of the recorded rate rises last month being for fixed rate bonds. In fact, the average two-year fixed bond has grown from 1.04% to 1.32% since the start of the year, and a similar picture can be seen for longer-term bonds. The average three-year fixed bond has grown from 1.21% to 1.56%, while the average five-year fixed bond is up to 1.92% from 1.67% in January 2017.

One-year Fixed Savings Interest Rates Hit Highest Level Since Base Rate Cut / Personal_Finance / Savings Accounts

It’s now been 11 months since the Bank of England cut the base rate to 0.25%, and many savers will have felt the impact. Thankfully, there have been some signs of life recently, with challenger banks increasing rates considerably on their one-year fixed rate bonds.

According to the latest research by moneyfacts.co.uk, the average one-year fixed bond rate has now hit 1.11%, which is the highest recorded rate since 4 August 2016.
