This article was inspired by Roger Nusbaum's post on his Random Roger blog - Sunday Morning Coffee on Sunday, April 8, 2012. Roger is a highly respected financial blogger that I believe is genuinely interested in providing his readers meaningful and prudent investment advice and guidance. Therefore, I have a great deal of respect for his work and intentions. On the other hand, Roger and I often disagree on certain investing principles, especially those that deal with asset allocation, proper diversification and the definition of risk. However, I would hope that he respects my differing views as being offered with the same best of intentions, as I see his offerings.

Crane Co. (CR) is a diversified manufacturer of highly engineered products with over $2.5 billion in sales. Fluid Handling is their largest segment with $1.1 billion in sales, followed by Aerospace & Electronics with $6.78 million, followed by Merchandising Systems with $374 million, followed by Engineered Materials with $220 million, and finally Controls with $120 million. However, in spite of their diversified businesses, the historical earnings record of this high-quality Mid-cap suffers from periods of cyclicality (see earnings graph below). Therefore, even though the company has strung together seven consecutive years of dividend increases that qualify it as a Dividend Challenger, prospective investors should consider their past record of dividend freezes during cyclical times.

Despite today's downgrade by BTIG, the reactive weakness so far has NOT inflicted any meaningful damage to the overall Apple (AAPL) Point & Figure chart structure. To inflict preliminary damage, the stock must press to a PF print of 623, which should trigger downside continuation to test much more meaningful PF support at 619. A print of 618 will trigger near term sell signals, and WILL represent a near term PF top in AAPL.

Further discussion indicated that this was probably due to the fact that bond yields were so low that people were flocking to stable utility stocks in lieu of bonds therefore driving utility stock prices to abnormal highs. This article is primarily designed to take a more specific look at whether or not utility stocks as an asset class are currently overvalued.
