Handy Ways to Boost Your Home Income

In an uncertain economic environment, everyone is looking for ways to generate extra income, either to supplement their earnings from regular work or to find an alternative to working in the office. Of course, it is always a good idea to start by carefully going through your budget and cutting out any unnecessary expenditure, and by checking with Citizens Advice Bureau or the Government’s own website to make sure you are receiving all the benefits and tax credits you may be entitled to.

However, with these basic steps out of the way, what other ways are there to improve your financial situation from home? Here are some of the most effective.

Take in a lodger

This is just one way that you can increase your income if you own your own home. Of course, it is important to check first that the terms of your mortgage, lease or rental agreement don’t forbid subletting, and it is also vital to do your research fully before you start to look for lodgers. If taking in a lodger on a long-term basis isn’t to your liking, there are other options, such as taking in foreign students who are staying in the UK for a short period. Some people who live near popular locations, such as train stations or football stadiums, rent out their drive for others to park

Clear out the clutter

We are often told that clearing out the clutter from our homes can be good psychologically, but it can also be a handy way to raise a few pounds. There are a range of options for selling your unwanted stuff, from car boot and garage sales to sites such as Gumtree and eBay. Other online companies will give you money for your old mobile or your unwanted gadgets, from game consoles to Satnavs, and you can also raise money by selling your old books or CDs through Amazon.

Online investing

These days, investing in stocks, shares and bonds is not just the preserve of the wealthy and those with a job in the City. The internet revolution, along with changes in the way that investment is regulated, has enabled the growth of an online investment sector, with brokers competing to find new clients, and sites from www.onlinebroker.net to Which? providing advice on how to start investing.

Of course, the drawback of investing as a way to boost your income is that you generally need to have an amount of money to begin with, although it is possible these days to get involved without putting up a large initial investment. You also have to do your homework to make sure that you fully understand the risks involved and it may take you a while to fully grasp the complexities of investing, but many online brokers provide helpful advice and tutorials for those who are new to it. Profit is not guaranteed, but some people have been able to boost their income through online investing.

Surveys and shopping

The retail industry is more competitive than ever, and it can offer some opportunities for those looking to improve their income. One approach is to get paid for filling in online surveys. If you have some spare time to devote to it, you can earn a handy amount of money to supplement your income through these surveys and there are plenty of sites online that will show you how to get started. You could also consider offering to be a mystery shopper. This involves you being asked to visit businesses such as hotels or restaurants to try out their services, and for those who have the time available, it can be a handy way to add to your income.

Payment protection insurance

You can’t have failed to notice that PPI has been a big deal in recent years, with consumers being bombarded with information about the potential compensation available for those who were mis-sold PPI, many of whom will not even be aware they are eligible. This is well worth looking into, but rather than use a PPI claim company, it is better to do the work yourself, as this way you won’t be forced to hand over a chunk of the payment if your claim is successful. Take a little time to research how to go about it, and then file your claim and see whether you are owed money.

Conclusion

Finding ways to earn extra money is something that a lot of people are focusing on these days, and while not all of the ideas outlined here may be suitable for you, they should at least help to get you thinking creatively and will hopefully inspire you to seek out what opportunities are available to help you boost your income from home.
