Can Investors Really Trust Chinese Stocks? / Companies / China Stocks
Martin Hutchinson writes: At first glance, Chinese stocks that trade on U.S. exchanges are dirt cheap. But the truth is you need to take a long hard look before you leap.
Behind the curtain you could find that they've cooked the books.
In fact, last week, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission accused the Chinese affiliates of "the Big Four" auditing companies of breaking securities laws after they refused to produce the "work papers" related to accounting fraud investigations at nine Chinese companies.

Keith Fitz-Gerald writes: [Kyoto, Japan] - Many investors have piled into Japan lately reasoning that somehow this will be "the year" Japan turns around and there will be lots of money to be made.

What's the Best Use of Corporate Profit (cash)? / Companies / Corporate Earnings
I have recently authored two articles showing that, all other things being equal, a stock that pays its shareholders a dividend generates a higher total return than a stock with similar growth characteristics that doesn’t. This is based on the reality that stock prices follow earnings in the long run, and it is this relationship that generates the capital gain component of total return. Therefore, if there is a dividend it will provide the shareholder the additional return from the income component (dividends). Links to the articles can be found here and here.

Cancer, Breaking Down a Biotech Winner / Companies / BioTech
Traditional cancer treatment options are little more than a crude mix of "slash, burn, and poison" â that is surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. There are radical new treatments in labs and trials all over the world that promise to throw out this trifecta; no other disease has received more of the research interest and funding that have defined modern biotechnology over the past three decades.

Peter Krauth writes: Thanks to the fracking boom of the last few years North America is now on a path toward energy self-sufficiency.

Trouble Knocking On Stock Bull’s Door, An AAPL A Day? / Companies / Tech Stocks
Trouble appears to be brewing for a weakening bull trend in stocks. Starting with the higher times frames, which are more controlling over daily and intra day, those charts followed by most traders, we see a rising wedge that is indicating a trend running out of demand effort. [A similar "wedge" situation was covered in our post on "10 Year Note and Wheat - How To Find Trades, 2 December 2012, see Commentaries].

Energy Sector Storm Brewing – Oil & Gas Stocks / Companies / Oil Companies
Oil and gas along with their equities have been underperforming for the most part of 2012 and they are still under heavy selling pressure.I watch the oil futures chart very closely for price and volume action. And the one thing that is clear for oil is that big sellers are still unloading copious amounts of contracts which is keeping the price from moving higher. Oil is trading in a very large range and is trending its way back down the lower reversal zone currently. Once price reverses back up and starts heading towards the $100 and $105 levels it will trigger strong buying across the entire energy sector.

How Dividend Paying Companies Are Helping Ahead of the Fiscal Cliff / Companies / Dividends
George Leong writes: The fiscal cliff is currently dictating the trading action in the equities market as we near December and the year-end. Augmented Reality: Do Smart Glasses Herald the End of the Smart Phone Era? / Companies / Technology
Computerised glasses are, at this moment, the wearable computing technology that is most likely to herald the beginning of the end of the Smartphone era. Although they are each taking slightly different approaches to these technologies, Apple, Google and Microsoft are all striving to define the market for wearable computers of which computerised glasses are an integral part. The US military, especially the Special Forces units, already use wearable computers for communications and satellite navigation tasks. That technology hasn't yet reached consumer or business users, but it soon will. Smart glasses are due to be launched selectively in the New Year.
