Don’t Keep Your Personal or Financial data on a Windows 10 Machine! / ConsumerWatch / Microsoft

By: Paul_Behan

Well not if you want to keep it private. Like many people I was surprised at the Edward Snowden revelations a few years ago. Nothing has seemed to change and in many cases things have got worse. Some corporations are in partnership with government agencies in regard to collection of data. Whilst the government has the right to collect data to try and protect is citizens from harm, in my opinion this data collections has gone way too far and is now breaching personal liberties.

What Microsoft’s Dismal Earnings Report Really Tells You / Companies / Microsoft

By: ...

MoneyMorning.com Keith Fitz-Gerald writes: The markets are quiet right now, even the typically volatile technology sector. But as the saying goes, past is prologue. Recent events surrounding Microsoft Inc. (NYSE:MSFT) presage big investment opportunities to come.

Microsoft’s latest earnings report landed with a resounding thud last week, catching millions of investors by surprise and prompting yet another round of debate about where to invest your “tech” dollars.

Should Stock Investors You Buy Microsoft On the Dip? / Companies / Microsoft

By: AnyOption

Microsoft has had a rocky relationship with investors over the years, especially the last one. If you look at the numbers over the last two years, it looks like the stock has soared with a 48.59% increase. But if you take a look at the last year alone, it’s up only 5.37%. Year to date it’s even worse at 1.79%.

To say the company has struggled to stay innovative amid competition with the likes of Apple and Google is an understatement. There’s a cartoon that’s been floating around the internet for years showing two small children representing Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox fighting it out, while another small child representing Windows Explorer is off in the corner eating glue.

Your Best Stock Investment in the "Cloud" Is Right Here / Companies / Microsoft

By: Money_Morning

Michael E. Lewitt writes: Last week, investors drove up the market valuations of both Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) and Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) by tens of billions of dollars based on excitement over the companies' "cloud computing" hosting businesses.

For both companies, cloud revenues and growth were the catalyst of the big moves.

Here’s Why Microsoft Stock Is Poised to Bounce Back / Companies / Microsoft

By: Money_Morning

Michael A. Robinson writes: Last week’s second-quarter earnings report from Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) disappointed Wall Street and plenty of other investors – and they punished the company by slashing its share price by 10% in one day, on Jan. 26.

However, that just makes the Microsoft story – which I began two weeks ago – more interesting.

Why Microsoft Stock Will Provide Major Investing Returns / Companies / Microsoft

By: Money_Morning

Michael E. Lewitt writes: On January 26, software giant Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) announced a disappointing quarter that sent Microsoft stock reeling by 10% on three times its normal trading volume.

It was the second major technology "miss" Wall Street had to digest in the last week's time, coming after a disastrous earnings release by IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM).

Bill Gates Says he's 'very happy' / Companies / Microsoft

By: Bloomberg

Bill Gates sat down with Bloomberg Television anchor Erik Schatzker at the Sibos conference in Boston today, where they discussed Microsoft's strategy, the Ebola outbreak, his philanthropic efforts, financial payment systems in Africa and more.

On whether Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is moving fast enough, Gates said, "I'm very happy with what he's doing. I see a new sense of energy. There's a lot of opportunity there, some things the company isn't the leader on, and he sees that he needs to change that."

On Ebola hitting the U.S., Gates said, "...the fact that this Dallas patient was identified, the contacts are being traced, I feel confident the CDC is very much on top of that. I wish every country had a health system like that...the US government's really stepping up on this and I think that is going to let the world get on top of it."

The Biggest Lesson from Microsoft’s Recent Battle with the US Government / Companies / Microsoft

By: Casey_Research

By Nick Giambruno, Senior Editor, InternationalMan.com

A court ruling involving Microsoft’s offshore data storage offers an instructive lesson on the long reach of the US government—and what you can do to mitigate this political risk.

A federal judge recently agreed with the US government that Microsoft must turn over its customer data that it holds offshore if requested in a search warrant. Microsoft had refused because the digital content being requested physically was located on servers in Ireland.

Why Microsoft Old Tech Stock Is Relevant Again / Companies / Microsoft

By: DailyGainsLetter

George Leong writes: The other day I talked about my growing optimism toward Apple Inc. (NASDAQ/AAPL) under the stewardship of CEO Tim Cook.

Now, I’ve noticed that a similar situation appears to be unfolding at Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ/MSFT), which is currently under the leadership of CEO Satya Nadella. Nadella is transforming the former Wall Street darling into an enterprise-driven company that’s focused on capitalizing on new technologies, rather than simply on operating systems, as my stock analysis indicates.

Why Microsoft Will Continue to Rebound, Huge Upside Potential / Companies / Microsoft

By: Money_Morning

William Patalon III writes: Just under a year ago, Capital Wave Forecast Editor Shah Gilani said it was time to buy Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqGS: MSFT).

It was a surprising call. The once-great software giant had become a moribund also-ran, and Wall Street clearly saw no future for the Redmond, Washington-based company.

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Stock's Forgotten Muscle / Companies / Microsoft

By: Money_Morning

Michael A. Robinson writes: We've talked a lot about the importance of targeting growth stocks as a great way to become financially independent.

In fact, growth is one of the five rules that my tech-wealth-building strategy uses to identify the best profit opportunities.

But you can't ignore "value" stocks - especially since "special situation" plays such as corporate turnarounds can generate windfall gains for your portfolio.

Future of Microsoft Stock Hinges on the Cloud / Companies / Microsoft

By: Money_Morning

David Zeiler writes: In his first “report card” since taking the reins of Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) in February, CEO Satya Nadella showed why he was exactly the right choice to get MSFT stock moving again.

Microsoft beat expectations when it reported earnings yesterday (Thursday) after the market close mostly on the strength of its cloud computing products – Nadella’s area of expertise, and the single most promising business segment for the Redmond-Wash.-based tech giant.

Nokia Deal Could Mark the Last Chapter for Microsoft / Companies / Microsoft

By: Vitaliy_Katsenelson

As a value investor I used to spend a great deal of time in Microsoft hell – on one hand there was the company with enormous cash flows, an incredible return on capital, a huge moat, a cash-rich balance sheet, and trading at single-digit multiples (if you adjust for cash).  But on the other hand it threw away cash away for multi-billion-dollar acquisitions, followed up by inevitable write-offs.  Its founder and chairman was not interested in running the company, so he delegated to his best friend, who has been wrong at every single technological inflection point, and quite frankly not a very good leader.  Every few years the company airbrushes its old products (think of Office), calls it an upgrade, and goes on charging subscription fees; but new products quite frankly … suck.  Microsoft's competitors are getting better, and while a strong balance sheet helps in bad times, it is not a competitive advantage against competitors that have even more cash.

Why I Like Microsoft’s Proposed Acquisition of Nokia’s Cell Phone Business / Companies / Microsoft

By: Profit_Confidential

George Leong writes: Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ/MSFT) is finally doing something that I have been calling for over the past several years. With CEO Steve Ballmer set to leave the company (read “Why Microsoft May Finally be Set to Turn its Fortune Around”), the former Wall Street favorite is making plans to aggressively expand its presence in the growing mobility market. How? Through its proposed acquisition of the cell phone business Nokia Corporation (NYSE/NOK), a deal valued at up to $7.2 billion, in an effort to expand in a sector dominated by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ/AAPL) and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.

Why Microsoft May Finally Be Set to Turn Its Fortune Around / Companies / Microsoft

By: Profit_Confidential

George Leong writes: Steve Ballmer’s run as the head of Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ/MSFT) is winding down after his somewhat surprising decision to exit the company within a year.

Yet the move may make the difference between Microsoft being a mediocre technology company or a technology company blazing ahead of its competitors, right at the forefront of technological advances.

Why the Microsoft Reorganization Plan Won't Fix What's Wrong / Companies / Microsoft

By: Money_Morning

David Zeiler writes: With a Microsoft reorganization plan expected to be announced on Thursday, investors at this point must be wondering: will it matter?

Shareholders of Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) have only recently gotten a glimmer of hope. Microsoft stock had languished in the $25-$30 range for more than a decade until this year, which has seen MSFT pop about 30%.

Big Blast-Off for Microsoft Windows 8 / Companies / Microsoft

By: Doug_Horning

Diamond Rated - Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleRecent days have seen a blizzard of Microsoft-related activity, as a host of new products has blanketed the marketplace.

First and foremost: the release of Windows 8, the most radical change in MS's flagship operating system in 17 years. The Redmond behemoth wants you to switch over, and fast. If you don't want to swap your old computer for one with the new OS pre-installed, the company has put an attractive $39.99 price out there for an in-place, downloadable upgrade (or $69.99 if you want a disc mailed).

Why Windows 8 Made Me Sell Microsoft Stock / Companies / Microsoft

By: Vitaliy_Katsenelson

I sang love serenades to Microsoft in the December issue, but a few weeks ago we sold our shares of Microsoft. Because we believe the stock is undervalued, that decision was not easy. What changed? A very important part of my thesis was the success of Windows 8, an operating system that Microsoft made for both PCs and tablets. When I saw Windows 8 demonstrated in early 2011, it looked like a very innovative, un-Microsoft-like product. Windows 8 was very important for Microsoft’s response to Apple’s iPad — a tablet that was deservingly stealing market share from low-end laptops. Windows 8 was supposed to take Microsoft to the next level, leapfrogging Apple and Google.

Microsoft Is Not as Boring as it Appears / Companies / Microsoft

By: Vitaliy_Katsenelson

I am bored and exhausted. I am on my third cup of coffee, but my lack of excitement has not changed, as I am about to explain why the sleepiest, most boring stock in the universe—Microsoft Corp.—offers a very compelling reward with very reasonable risk.

Microsoft was the bright light in the tech firmament in the 1980s and ’90s. Then it got too successful, overconfident, lazy and uncreative, and started making bad products and wasteful acquisitions. Worthy competition eventually emerged from the likes of Apple and Google, and Microsoft had to fight for its existence and relevance.

Microsoft-Nokia Deal Doesn't Guarantee a Spike in Smartphone Market Share / Companies / Microsoft

By: Money_Morning

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleDavid Zeiler writes: While two major research firms predict that the February deal struck between Microsoft Corporation (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Nokia Corporation (NYSE ADR: NOK) will result in a huge jump in smartphone market share for Windows Phone, such gains won't come easily - if at all.

Microsoft Sitting on $44 Billion in Cash, Time for Investors to Buy? / Companies / Microsoft

By: Money_Morning

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleJack Barnes writes: The last time I recommended Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT), Bill Clinton was in the White House. But it's time to take another look at the "cash-flow-engine" that Bill Gates built - and to explain why Microsoft is a "Buy" in today's stock market.

Microsoft is one of the safest investments in the world, but the software giant's stock price has done essentially nothing for the last 10 years. But the company is still a monopoly, has no debt, and continues to generate a torrent of cash.

Microsoft Emerging Market Growth Threatened by Rampant Software Piracy / Companies / Microsoft

By: Mike_Caggeso

Earlier this month, Microsoft Corp. ( MSFT ) announced its second "Fair Play Day" in 14 Latin American countries, where investigations led to the seizure of more than 160,000 counterfeit copies of Microsoft software. The contraband had an estimated street value of $18.2 million.

This is just the latest attempt by the software giant to try to stem the rising tide of counterfeit products that costs the company millions of dollars annually in some of its most promising markets.
