Former Lehman Brothers Trader: Traders Shorting VIX Will Blow Themselves Up / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: John_Mauldin

BY JARED DILLIAN : The New York Times’ DealBook had a great piece of journalism a couple of days ago about short VIX carry monkeys. Well, that is what I call them.

The article features a former Target logistics manager who has goosed his net worth up to $12 million by betting that the VIX will go down. He is in the process of raising $100 million for a VIX-smashing hedge fund.

Stock Market XIV Starting To Crack And The VIX Ends Its Streak / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: Submissions

Mike Golembesky: Recent Price Action

This week the XIV continued to grind higher finally reaching a high of 96.98 on Wednesday afternoon. This high was followed by a very small move to the downside late in the day on Wednesday.

Thursday morning saw a slight recovery but by the noon lunch hour, the XIV started showing signs of weakness. By 12:30 the XIV began to move sharply lower finally bottoming at the 89.28 level, some 7.5% off of the high of the day.

Three Main Lies About Stock Market Volatility / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: Adam_ODell

Volatility gets a bad rap.

The media typically portrays it as the financial world’s evil villain personified, saying things like…

“Volatility reared its ugly head on Monday.”

Or…

“Volatility is striking fear into the heart of the masses.”

You can almost picture the CGI monster Hollywood would create – the “Volatility Viper” – with its ten snake heads and blood-dripping fangs, snapping at Wall Street suits as they run for their lives.

Risk measurement? Volatility doesn’t cut it / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: Submissions

Henrique Schneider writes: Almost every investor and almost every portfolio use volatility as an indication of risk. There’s nothing awfully wrong with that. But some investors and some portfolios reduce risk to volatility. And this is a serious error, since gauging on volatility is myopic, misinformed and revenue-averse. Why?

Stock Market VIX Cycles Set to Explode in March/April 2017 / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: Chris_Vermeulen

My recent analysis of the markets has shown what I believe to be an explosion in market volatility set to starting happening between February 21, 2017 and March 30, 2017.  The historical VIX cycles have been running about 18~22 week intervals for expansion and extreme volatility levels.  The period August 2015 to January 2016 represented roughly 5 months.  The period between January 2016 to June 2016 represented roughly 5 months.  The period between June 2016 to Early November 2016 represented roughly 5 months (just a little short of 5 months in reality).

This Election Marks the Beginning of Market Volatility / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: John_Mauldin

BY JARED DILLIAN : Volatility is high going into this election (because nobody knows what will happen, and there is a lot at stake). People think that after the election, the uncertainty will be out of the way, and volatility will subside.

Will it?

Stock Market VIX / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: Marty_Chenard

The current VIX Index (Volatility Index) chart is posted below going back to 2015.

Please note the following: The long term trend has been down with each successive peak being lower. (A lower VIX correlates with a higher stock market and a higher VIX with a lower stock market.)

Is Stock Market VIX Really OK? / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: Marty_Chenard

Yesterday, the VIX closed at 15.58, so it looks like it is okay. But is it really?

The verdict is actually not in yet ... take a look at October, April and now. April was the lowest reading, with October and now not as low as it was in April. With that condition, there remains a possibility of an inverted Head & Shoulder pattern which would have upside implications for the VIX.

Stock Market VIX Golden Cross Not Seen Since 2007 / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: Ashraf_Laidi

The VIX may be 60% below the six-year highs reached last month, but the confluence of medium-trend measures shows a technical development seen only in three occasions over the last 14 years; August 2001, August 2007 and July 2002. This development is the Golden Cross via the 55-week moving average crossing above the 200-week moving average. It is happening again today.

Stock Market Watch The VIX ... / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: Marty_Chenard

The VIX is now coming to the end of its triangular pattern.

What does that mean? It means that, before too long, it will have to break out of the triangular pattern. When it does, it will have an important impact on the market.

Stock Market VIX Volatile Volatility, you have to see this to believe it! / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: Anthony_Cherniawski

My conjecture may be right. Someone very big appears to be caught on the wrong side of this trade. I have been watching this nonsense for the past two hours. This may not end well for the poor guy(s) that cannot get out.

Earlier today ZeroHedge revealed a low liquidity alert in the SPX futures. It may have also extended to the VIX.

What USA Today Got Wrong About the Stock Market Fear Gauge / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: Money_Morning

Keith Fitz-Gerald writes: Like many newspapers racing for headlines during the recent pullback, USA Today Money highlighted a rapid rise in the VIX as proof positive that “fear” had returned to the markets.

That fear had “spiked,” to use their words.

Take a look at this clipping…

Stock Market VIX Analysis / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: Ed_Carlson

The CBOE Market Volatility index, or VIX, is a key measure of market expectations of near-term volatility conveyed by S&P 500 stock index option prices. The VIX moves inversely with equities so that when equities are rising, the VIX is falling and vice versa.

The Death of Stock Market Volatility / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: Jesse

The US equity markets ended the week on a dull note, barely able to bounce after a lower open to end the week on a correcting note.

The question will be if this is just a consolidation after a widely noted great leap upwards, or will we see a bit more action to the downside before this is over.

Stock Market VIX Term Structure / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: Ed_Carlson

The VIX term structure illustrates, by maturity, market expectations of volatility conveyed by S&P 500 stock index option prices. The chart (figure 1) below shows the option market's expectation of future market volatility as of last Friday. Currently, the VIX term structure is the steepest it has been in several months. This is a sign of complacency among market participants. Contrarians consider this to be bearish for the equity market.

Taking Advantage of Recent Lows in Stock Market Volatility Index / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: J_W_Jones

One of the newest option products to appear in our universe as an options trader is the option series designed to trade the volatility index (VIX). The VIX is a measurement of the implied volatility of the S&P 500 index.

To review quickly, the implied volatility of an options series is reflective of the aggregate market opinion of the future volatility of a given underlying asset. In terms of the Volatility Index, the price is the current market opinion of the future volatility in the S&P 500 Index over the next 12 months.

Minimize Stock Market Volatility With These Two ETFs / Stock-Markets / Volatility

By: Benjamin_Shepherd

The S&P 500 has given up 7 percent since peaking in April 2012, primarily because of uncertainty regarding Greece’s commitment to the terms of its bailout.

If a second round of elections in Greece on June 17 fails to produce a government—or if anti-austerity factions gain control—the stage will be set for the country to exit the euro, with a potentially disastrous domino effect across the Continent. The US also faces economic and fiscal challenges, as well as its own contentious elections in November.
