How to Buy Happiness / Personal_Finance / Money Saving

By: DailyWealth

Mark Ford writes: Many times, the things/experiences that give us the greatest joy are free.

But oftentimes, money is involved. And when that's the case, we have to weigh the cost of the thing/experience against the pleasure we will get from it.

One example: owning a home...

In Automatic Wealth, I argued that one of the most important things you can do to become rich is to get off the "moving-on-up train" and be satisfied with the house you have.

Whom Would You Trust with Your Savings: Your Grandfather or Big Brother? / Personal_Finance / Money Saving

By: Don_Miller

My grandfather was named William Smith, and he was about as common a man as his name implies. He was an army sergeant in WW II, then came home and ran the family farm when the war was over. I doubt he ever heard of Keynesian or Austrian economic theories, but his words of wisdom made it clear just where he stood.

Income vs Assets - What’s the Point of Owning All This Stuff? / Personal_Finance / Money Saving

By: Don_Miller

When my wife Jo and I decided to sell our home in Illinois, the first question we asked ourselves was, "What are we going to do with all our stuff?" Somehow our children, neighbors, friends, the Salvation Army, and a moving van would have to magically make it disappear sometime before we closed escrow at the end of the month.

My many theories about stuff have proven to be true over the dozen or more homes I've lived in during the last 73 years. First off, no matter the size of the home, it's always full of stuff within five years. When we sold our home in Pensacola along with all of its furnishings, we managed to fill the next one to the brim in no time flat.

How to Tell If You’re Rich / Personal_Finance / Money Saving

By: Investment_U

Alexander Green writes: One of the biggest points of contention in the last election was whether the rich pay their fair share of taxes. Polls show the majority of voters don’t believe they do.

Of course, this begs the questions: Who is “rich” and what is “fair?”

Answers are largely a matter of opinion. But here is a fact: IRS figures show that the top 10% of income earners make 43% of all the income and pay 70% of all the taxes. Is that fair? If not, how much should they pay: 75%… 90%… all of it? And how about the now widely recognized fact – thanks to Mitt Romney’s secret videographer – that 47% of Americans don’t pay any income taxes. Is that fair? Opinions will vary.
