Matthew Carr writes: The digital age has completely enveloped us.

It’s changed the way we do practically everything in our lives. Mostly for the better.

For one thing, it’s nearly impossible to be bored in the world we live in. We have devices on us at all times - our smartphones - that allow us to connect to all knowledge of human history.

Terrorism - Grinch that Stole Christmas / Politics / Shopping

By: BATR

The usual holiday cheer that underpins the throngs of shoppers may be missing this season. Political pundits are eager to blame potential terrorist risks as a compelling reason to avoid the crowds at malls, but knowing the sentiments of the consumer culture, it is difficult to accept that retail businesses will be empty. Nevertheless, will the economy incentivize the bargain hunters to brave the added security obstacles to storm the doors for the reward of super discount pricing?

Why Black Friday Needs to be a National Holiday / Politics / Shopping

By: Walter_Brasch

At one time, people placed carved pumpkins with a candle inside on their front porches to announce the beginning of the Halloween season.

And then it became a contest. First, best Halloween pumpkin. And then who could decorate their trees and hedges with the best fake cobwebs, followed by fake witches in trees.

Britain's election economic boom is in full swing with the UK economy looking set to bust above a 3% GDP growth rate, further boosted by the collapse in the oil price that is acting to depress inflation (general prices) and put extra money into the pockets of consumers that is manifesting during the holiday season as consumers go on a debt fuelled spending binge at the cathedrals of modern Britain, jam packed with shoppers afflicted with sales fever hunting for bargains as Christmas has morphed into a month long relentless advertisement to spend, spend and then gain spend some more into January.

TrueShopping.co.uk Real Customer Experience Review - Online Shopping Lessons / ConsumerWatch / Shopping

By: Nadeem_Walayat

At the start of November with winter fast approaching and the temperature starting to drop, I decided it was time to get a decent set of ladders to enable me to complete a whole host of maintenance tasks before winter and after much searching settled on a large 12 rung Triple Extension Ladder supplied by the online retailer TrueShopping.co.uk, that could also be used as double extension step ladder though which lacked adequate online customer reviews though I did not think it would make much material difference to products such as ladders.

Getting the Most Value from Your “Geriatric Cruiser” / Personal_Finance / Shopping

By: Don_Miller

For many a car lover, retiring rich requires the end of a lifelong love affair. I empathize with them all; I’ve had my own romance over the last 50-plus years.

Cars have a special resonance for people of my generation. George Lucas’ classic coming of age film American Graffiti is proof positive of that. As teens we flocked to auto dealers when new models came out and fantasized about actually being able to own our favorite. And let’s face it: cool cars were chick magnets. In our 20s and 30s, with the help of a friendly finance company, those dreams became reality, and every few years we’d get the new car itch again.

Escape the Toy Trap / Personal_Finance / Shopping

By: Don_Miller

The toy trap: we all have friends who’ve fallen in. I received a wave of emails after publishing Debt: The Last Social Taboo?, all sharing similar sad stories. Author Dave Ramsey summed up the problem best: “We buy things we don’t need with money we don’t have to impress people we don’t like.”

What's Fueling the Post Christmas Sales? / Economics / Shopping

By: Jonathan_Davis

I was on BBC Radio London yesterday talking about the Sales. The idea was that we’re all being duped into buying stuff we don’t need. Well Duh!!! Isn’t that the basis of our economy for the last 25 years?

However, I think this year is a watershed.

January Sales 2014 - Post Christmas 2013 High Street Sales List - Discount Voucher Codes? / Personal_Finance / Shopping

By: Nadeem_Walayat

Shop-till-you-drop looks set to continue all the way into January which was once upon a time the true start date for the holiday sales season that over the decades has meandered its way towards the end of November. Though of course most of these early sales are bogus, for these 50% off sales amount to nothing more than the original prices as the real sales only began online Christmas Eve and in store on Boxing day. Even then consumers need to be on their guard because it was very difficult if not impossible to capitalise on most of the discounts promoted, for instance many of the goods that you may have been interested in at for say 60% off have mysteriously become out of stock!

Boxing Day Sales 2013 List, But Are the Sales of 2013 Real? / Personal_Finance / Shopping

By: Nadeem_Walayat

Praise the lord for without Jesus there would be no 75% discounts! Britain's cathedrals of consumerism look set to be full to bursting point on Boxing day as bargain hunters resume celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ after a day of partial rest (online shopping) by maxing out their credit cards on asian sweat shops produced goods. Unlike the 50% sales in the lead up to Christmas Eve, these should represent the REAL SALES that for many stores started online late Christmas eve, as Christmas day shopping seamlessly continues into the shopping malls early Thursday morning and thus not even a storm damaged and disrupted transport network will be able to stop Britain's shopping zealots from securing their piece of the consumer sales relics of 2013.

The Business of the Christmas Season / Politics / Shopping

By: BATR

Commercialism, long criticized, as a distortion of the true celebration of Christmas, has become a crucial profit component for the corporate economy. Very little observation about the religious nature of the holiday rises for reflection. Likewise, even less focus is devoted to the underlying reasons why holiday gifting has become a stable to the season. Heritage and tradition has given way to popular cultural advertisement. A disconnect between purchases of necessity and acquisitions of disposable novelties is the hallmark of the mad rush to buy needless objects.
