Tech Sector Could Outperform in a More Stable 2012 / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Submissions

Benjamin Shepherd writes:  At the start of a new year, I traditionally ponder where to find relative outperformance among the market’s sectors. As such, I believe now is the time for investors to add risk to their portfolios by emphasizing more cyclical corners of the market. While a defensive approach to equities was the best strategy last year, my view is that continued economic improvement in the US, a quieting of the European sovereign-debt crisis and further growth in emerging markets justifies a more offensive stance. For 2012, I am quite optimistic on the technology sector to take advantage of a better economic climate

Four Dividend Stocks to Put Money in Your Pocket / Companies / Dividends

By: Money_Morning

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleDon Miller writes: Anxiety over the European debt crisis and distrust in the markets drove volatility in global stock markets to dizzying heights in 2011. The intense level of chaos, and record low bond yields, sent investors scrambling for stocks that deliver steady returns in the form of dividends.

Amazon Stock Countertrend Rally / Companies / Company Chart Analysis

By: Mike_Paulenoff

Yesterday's plunge in Amazon (AMZN) changed my perception of the strength of the rally off of the Dec 29 low at 166.97. As of this moment, my pattern work argues that a complex corrective counter-trend rally is in progress that should propel AMZN to 190-193, but which likely will be followed by another loop to the downside that revisits the Dec 29 low.

An Options Strategy That Will Save You Some Money / Companies / Options & Warrants

By: Money_Morning

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleLarry D. Spears writes: Whether you credit a Santa Claus rally, an early January Effect, or some other driving market force, there's no disputing the strong finish posted by stocks in 2011 - or the healthy 2012 opening advance added in the first week of January.

To be specific, stocks - as measured by the Standard & Poor's 500 Index - rose from 1,204.00 at the close on Monday, Dec. 19, to 1,257.60 on Friday, Dec. 30, then jumped to 1,280.15 at midday yesterday (Monday), a gain of 6.32% in just three weeks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average did almost as well, climbing from 11,751.96 on Dec. 19 to 12,398.29 in Monday trading, a 21-day gain of 5.50%.

Bottoming Period for Amazon Stock / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Mike_Paulenoff

My pattern and momentum work argue strongly that Amazon (AMZN) completed a major corrective process at its Dec 29 low at 16.97 off of its Sep 20 high at 244.30.

All of the action off of last week's low at 166.97 represents the initiation of a bottoming period that should morph into a powerful recovery upleg into the 200-210 initial target zone.

Is It Time to Buy These "Death Watch" Stocks? / Companies / Investing 2012

By: Money_Morning

Kerri Shannon writes: Money Morning's Keith Fitz-Gerald joined Fox Business's Stuart Varney yesterday (Wednesday) to discuss three stocks Varney said were on "death watch" - including Eastman Kodak Co. (NYSE: EK), rumored to be on the brink of filing for bankruptcy.

Varney asked Fitz-Gerald if any of these companies presented a buy-when-it's-cheap opportunity, or if investors should steer clear.

Foreign Investing Driving New Era of Profit Opportunities for U.S. Gas Companies / Companies / Natural Gas

By: Money_Morning

David Zeiler writes: U.S. natural gas companies have found a convenient new way to boost their profits - by drawing in overseas companies to help fund their development projects.

The maneuver was illustrated yesterday (Tuesday), when two large foreign companies bought big stakes in major U.S. shale projects.

French oil major Total S.A. (NYSE ADR: TOT) said it would invest $2.3 billion in Chesapeake Energy Corp.'s (NYSE: CHK) Utica Shale operation in eastern Ohio. Within hours, China Petroleum & Chemical Corp. (NYSE ADR: SNP), also known as Sinopec, announced a $2.2 billion deal to buy a 30% stake in five Devon Energy Corp. (NYSE: DVN) shale projects.

Mind the Leveraged ETF's 2012, They Might Kill your Portfolio! / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Willem_Weytjens

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleIn this article I will show you why it's wise to be careful with leveraged products, such as Proshares Ultra ETF's and Direxion 3x ETF etc... as they might KILL your portfolio!

Proshares states on its website:

Mind the Leverage

Each Short or Ultra ProShares ETF seeks a return that is either 3x, 2x, -1x, -2x or -3x of the return of an index or other benchmark (target) for a single day, as measured from one NAV calculation to the next. Due to the compounding of daily returns, ProShares' returns over periods other than one day will likely differ in amount and possibly direction from the target return for the same period. These effects may be more pronounced in funds with larger or inverse multiples and in funds with volatile benchmarks. Investors should monitor their ProShares holdings consistent with their strategies, as frequently as daily.

Banking Stocks Downtrend Still Dominant / Companies / Banking Stocks

By: Mike_Paulenoff

Despite last week's rally in the major trader/broker banks, let's notice that none of the upmoves in Bank of America (BAC), Goldman Sachs (GS) and Morgan Stanley (MS) inflicted significant damage to the still-dominant downtrends.

You can see the near- and intermediate-term resistance levels labeled on the enclosed charts. Only BAC made a new low (4.92) for the bear phase, and then staged a 15% multi-day rally to 5.65, but appears to have stalled right at its nearest-term hourly resistance line.

End Your Exposure to this Eurozone Debt Crisis Victim / Companies / Corporate News

By: Money_Morning

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleJack Barnes writes: Around this time last year I warned you that the Eurozone debt crisis would trample the Italian economy and take carmaker Fiat S.p.A. (PINK: FIATY) down with it.

To profit from this debacle, I told you to short Fiat. Since then, the stock has tumbled 76%, from $19 a share to yesterday's (Wednesday's) closing price of $4.66.

But they missed the real story - one that will make a few savvy investors a small fortune.

If you want big profits from the next generation of space travel, keep an eye on new developments at a small but highly respected research arm of the Pentagon.

Catastrophic Success, Bio-Tec Breakthrough Technology Alert / Companies / Technology

By: John_Mauldin

Diamond Rated - Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleNew readers to my musings often find it interesting, when they meet me in person, to find me quite an optimistic person, given the nature of my current predictions about the economy. And regarding the short term, defined as less than five years, my writing is admittedly less than sanguine. We do have some problems that are not easily dealt with. And even longer-term, those of a bearish natural disposition can find reasons a-plenty to tone it down.

Bank of America Downtrend Still Intact / Companies / Company Chart Analysis

By: Mike_Paulenoff

Apart from the fact that Bank of America (BAC) is up 3% the day after it hit a low 4.93 yesterday, the lowest level since March 2009, let's notice that current strength has not inflicted any meaningful technical damage to the nearest-term downtrend -- at least not yet.

BAC must hurdle and sustain above 5.23 to inflict preliminary technical damage. However, upside continuation that climbs above 5.29/30 to hurdle my 30-period exponential moving average is needed to really get my attention on the long side of BAC.
