Microsoft Vista goes on Sale Today 30th Jan 07 - But NO Mad Rush to Buy

ConsumerWatch / Strategic News Jan 30, 2007 - 09:44 PM GMT

By: Certman

ConsumerWatch The big day for Microsoft finally came, when consumers could buy one of the 5 versions of Vista as it went on general release. Yes that's FIVE versions, you are probably only aware of the 4 consumer versions, but there is also a developers edition which makes the total 5.

Microsoft Vista goes on Sale Today 30th Jan 07 - But NO Mad Rush to Buy

The new operating system went on release in over 70 countries. Unfortunately for Microsoft the mad rush to buy that has been so associated with the release of the various gaming systems never materialized. As customers have on the whole chosen to wait it out.

The release price of the Vista O/S is $100 for the Basic Home Edition, rising to $249 for the Ultimate Edition. However, is a severe blow to potential UK customers. the O/S is going on sale at £100 rising to £249 for the Ultimate Edition ? What happened to the £/$ 1.97 exchange rate ? This is further expected to dent overseas sales, especially in the UK.

On the 12th November 06, we highlighted the many changes and enhancements that the New operating system will offer over XP. The actual benefits depend on which system the end user opts for.

However, it has not been smooth sailing for Microsoft, as a series of security flaws were revealed during December 06, which deflated one of the most publicized benefits of Vista, i.e. the improved security and firewall layers.

Most users will make the move to Vista as part of New Computer Systems, therefore PC Suppliers such as Dell can expect some sort of a boost. Existing users have various upgrade options from XP to one of the four standard versions of Vista. And in a new move, Microsoft has included all four versions of Vista on one DVD release, where the version installed depends on the Licence key purchased from Microsoft and used during the installation process. The benefit of this is easier upgrading by the consumer between versions of Vista, as all that would be required is to purchase online, the relevant Vista version's Licence key.
