Reasons for the Success of the Dating Market

Personal_Finance / Internet Jun 10, 2019 - 03:31 PM GMT

Personal_Finance At the beginning of the 2000s, online dating was considered to be exotic at best. However, the increase of popularity of the internet was the major factor behinds its success: according to Gfk, in 2008, only 25.4% of Americans over the age 16 used the Internet, and by 2018 the number had grown to almost 83% of the population of America.

The sheer presence of the Internet in our daily lives has fundamentally changed the market of services: goods delivery services, ticket booking applications, and online cinemas became a thing, thanks to which it has become much easier and more convenient to satisfy your own needs, no matter what they are. Since communication with other people is also a big part of our lives, users have begun to look for ways satisfy it as well: on the Internet, it is much easier to start a relationship and turn it into something serious in a matter of only a few weeks.

Judging by the data we’ve got from Dating Sites Reviews for 2018, there are many new trends in online dating. About 46% of users registered in online dating services found their current partner online, an increase of 2 percent over the previous year.

The launch of the Tinder application in 2012 greatly influenced the change of behavioral patterns. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, a professor of business psychology at the University of London and vice president of research and innovation at Hogan Assessment Systems, explained to the Guardian that Tinder has become more socialized than all of its competitors, so there should be no shame in using it, its popularity is very much deserved.

More opportunities for dating

According to Joshua Ortega, a researcher at the University of Essex, the emergence of dating services contributed to the development of a harmonious society. Online dating completely changed the system in which people were limited in terms of their social status and location. “When people meet on the Internet, they establish social ties that previously couldn’t have been made,” he says.

There are no borders in the virtual environment. Users can find love not only in another city but also on another continent. Thanks to the abundance of services, people are now able to search for a partner by using a virtually unlimited number of dating apps, as well as apply lots of different filters and choose a partner according to strict criteria.

Ortega believes that online dating affected the frequency of interracial marriages: soon after the appearance of the first dating site,, in 1995, the percentage of marriages made between interracial couples quickly increased. Growth continued at the beginning of the 2000s when OK Cupid entered the market. Another sharp leap of the popularity of the dating market was recorded by scientists in 2014 when Tinder became the market leader.

According to another study conducted by Tinder employees, finding a partner by using a dating service is much more successful than doing so offline. According to statistics, about 74% of users of dating apps have started a relationship with a person of the opposite sex at least once. Among the more conservative people (those who don’t use dating services) only every second person had a relationship with a person of the opposite sex in their life.

It is much safer to meet people by using dating applications like than to just go on a date with a stranger. Firstly, users can communicate with an interlocutor by using other social networks and find out all the information before the first meeting in real life.

In addition, popular online services support a special validation of profiles for authenticity: users that want to get registered are asked to upload a new photo of themselves, which are checked by live moderators. For example, in one of the most popular dating applications, Badoo, as according to the founder of the service, Andrei Andreyev, the company has over five thousand moderators who verify the photos.

Of course, there are fraudsters one can encounter online, but the usual security rules (for example, not to transfer money to strangers) work in the virtual life as well.

Easier to find a pair

Despite the abundance of social networks, people still prefer to get acquainted with potential partners by using specialized services. This is explained by the fact that people use Facebook for various different purposes: for work, for study, for entertainment, and so on. But this does not mean that a user of a usual social network would want to date people there. However, if a person is registered in Tinder or Badoo, it means that they are initially open to communication.
