5 Fool-Proof Ways to Keep Your Home Tech-Compatible

Technology changes more rapidly now than it has at any time in the past. Keeping up with the latest advances in technology means home improvements to accommodate them. First-time homeowners who want to future proof their homes should look to where technology is headed. That being said, here are a handful of ways you can help future-proof your home.

Electric Car Ports

Global sales of electric cars have been rising since 2011. Electric vehicle sales started off sluggish with less than 50,000 sales in 2010, but that's not the case today. Tesla and other traditional car companies have fully committed to electric vehicles. Sales in the U.S. alone have risen to over 250,000 EVs sold per year in 2019. One of the best things you can do to future-proof your home is including an EV charging port. Analysts believe that electric vehicles will be cheaper to own than gas-powered vehicles by 2022. That's not too far off, but looking down the road illustrates why the change is essential. Analysts say there will be at least 41 million electric vehicles on the road by 2040.

Wired Home

With the trend toward wireless electronics, you may not be thinking about the wiring job in your home. Despite our preference for wireless devices, you'll still need a good wiring solution. Ultra-high-definition streaming requires wires that can handle all of the electronics you'll be connecting. A house without proper wiring for internet-connected devices is like a highway with no lane dividers. Analysts believe the average home will have over 500 smart devices by 2022. The bandwidth needed to power all these devices means building spare cable conduits in any home renovation project. New installs should include power lines, ethernet cables, HDMI, coax cables, and any needed phone jacks.

Home Automation

Home automation is the next step in future-proofing your home. It allows homeowners to set up schedules for lighting, security, and heating and cooling. It's more energy-efficient, but home automation extends beyond just smart technology. A home lifts company can help you understand how a home lift could tie into home automation. Automating the needs of homeowners is the future, and lift technology is rapidly changing. They can be installed in much smaller spaces, depending on the type of lift you choose.

Open Floor Plan

Technology is all about shrinking things to a manageable size, but that's not always the case. Many new devices require an open floor plan to feel at home in the space. Our 70-inch TVs are only the start of needing more space. As virtual reality and alternate reality technology takes hold, you'll be thankful for the extra space to move around. Room-scale virtual reality can transform an entire room into another realm. Even today's consoles feature games that require dancing and movement control.

One Single Connection

What happens to a smart home when the internet is down? The simple answer is that it becomes useless unless you have a backup plan. Speedify combines Wi-Fi, ethernet, 4G, and 5G devices into one single connection. The service uses channel bonding to split data packets between several networks. That means if one goes down, you can still use the others. It's a subscription service for now, but it's a quick way to future-proof your home connection.
