We Need A Media War On All Fronts / Politics / Mainstream Media

By: Danny_Schechter

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleWhen do you feel like you are over the hill?

When you get letters like this one from Jose Hevia after writing an op ed featuring an essay (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...) from your recent book Blogothon, (http://www.1888pressrelease.com/...)  recounting your experiences as a network TV insider turned independent media outsider. The essay offered a case study of how the nominally non-commercial network, PBS, turned its back on a human rights TV series I co-produced. It is about the challenges progressives face in offering a counter-narrative to parochial mainstream thinking.

The Axis of Indifference In The Media World / Politics / Mainstream Media

By: Danny_Schechter

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleForeign correspondents have always been revered within journalism. That’s why covering Iraq or other wars are assignments so many reporters cultivate. Many see them as a ticket up the media pecking order.

Being “under fire” promise excitement, danger and—let’s face it, on TV —precious “face time.” Going overseas is often a route to more visibility and  better jobs at home on the strength of your “bravery/” War reporting can be the macho oxygen of ambition.

What Magazine Covers Really Say About the Stock Market / InvestorEducation / Mainstream Media

By: Money_Morning

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleKeith Fitz-Gerald writes: Will Rogers once said that "good judgment comes from bad experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment."

If he only knew.

Then again, as one of America's famous humorists and social commentators, I suspect he "knew" all too well that history rarely works out the way people think.

Sayonara To Mike Wallace And The News Era He Led / Politics / Mainstream Media

By: Danny_Schechter

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleNew York: Mike Wallace lived a long life and became one of America’s best-known non-anchor news stars, whose frequent appearances stirred controversies and broke countless stories.

The picture in the New York Times obit showed his wall of Emmys—I am sure he had a museumfull—all thanks to  his relentless drive and unlimited energy.

Mainstream Media Drivel on U.S. / Israel Iran War Plans / Politics / Mainstream Media

By: Finian_Cunningham

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThanks to a subservient mainstream media, we are now fed a constant diet of preposterous double-think from American political leaders and their Israeli minions with regard to Iran and its alleged threat to world security. In this inadvertently valuable service, the pliant uncritical mainstream media is giving full vent to the most outrageous drivel dressed up as serious discourse.

UK Ban of Press TV, The New Media War! / Politics / Mainstream Media

By: Danny_Schechter

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThe British media regulator OFCOM has pulled Press TV’s license to be seen in the United Kingdom.

The regulator that has done so little to regulate the methods of Rupert. Murdoch’s media practices, or BBC’s tilted coverage of the war in Iraq,  has suddenly decided that the Iran’s global English language channel must be sanctioned by being removed  and silenced. (Ironically, it was Murdoch’s BSKYB channel that carried Press TV in the UK)

Western Mainstream Media Complicit in NATO War Crimes in Libya / Politics / Mainstream Media

By: Finian_Cunningham

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleLibya represents a new low in Western government war crimes – which is something of a disturbing record given the decades of war criminality by these governments.

In Libya, not only is there the criminal military assault on a sovereign country, the destruction of civilian infrastructure, the murder of women and children, and all the violation of international law that that entails – we now have the complete lobotomisation of language and normal meaning of words.

Monetizing Electoral Politics: TV Networks Are Out To Sell, Not Tell / Politics / Mainstream Media

By: Danny_Schechter

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleAlready the projections are in—not for who is going to win the election in 2012---but for how much it is likely to cost.

Public Radio International concludes: “Campaign spending in the 2012 US election could reach $6 or 7 billion dollars as outside groups pay for electoral influence.”

The Mainstream Media Are Paid To Lie for the State / Politics / Mainstream Media

By: LewRockwell

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleScott Lazarowitz writes: It’s bad enough the possibility that there might have been some hanky-panky going on regarding the vote count at the Iowa Straw Poll this week, in which Ron Paul received 4,671 votes to Michele Bachmann’s 4,823, a difference of just 152 votes. But to see one national media outlet after another completely ignoring Dr. Paul’s virtual tie for the #1 spot, and others who continue to dismiss Paul as "fringe," despite Paul’s being the most mainstream and commonsensical of all the candidates, is amazing.

More Trouble in Murdoch-world / Politics / Mainstream Media

By: Mike_Whitney

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleRupert Murdoch's troubles keep piling up.

On Friday, Labor leader Ed Miliband called for a break-up of the Murdoch empire saying, "I think he has too much power over British public life.....We’ve got to look at the situation whereby one person can own more than 20 percent of the newspaper market....I think it’s unhealthy.”

Murdoch Heads for a Fall / Politics / Mainstream Media

By: Mike_Whitney

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleBoy, this is about as sleazy as it gets....

Imagine that your 13-year old daughter has been kidnapped and you have no idea where she is. So you frantically call her cell phone over and over clinging to the faint hope that she might still be alive. And, then, a miracle happens; you notice that messages on her phone have been deleted signalling that she's still alive but unable to call back.

Russia Today Schizophrenia, State Funded Propaganda and the Global Media War / Politics / Mainstream Media

By: William_Bowles

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleIs Russia Today a sign of things to come in the world media order?

A global, digital media cuts both ways or as they say 'what's good for the goose is also good for the gander'. The arrival of The Real News Network, Democracy Now! and grtv for example demonstrates what can be done, even on a shoestring budget. But to get onto the global media circuit still requires big bucks in spite of all the talk about 'convergence' and 'citizen journalism'.

Mainstream Media's Arteries Clogged Up with Theorists / Politics / Mainstream Media

By: Fred_Sheehan

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleIt was not difficult for an observer to understand Armageddon beckoned by 2006, as long as the observer listened to practitioners rather than theorists. The theorists: government bureaucrats and their sycophants, clog the media's arteries. Those who listened to practitioners were prepared in 2007.

How the Mainstream Media Covers Bilderberg Meetings / Politics / Mainstream Media

By: BATR

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThe mainstream media blackout of the annual Bilderberg meeting is finally crumbling. Yet the prevarication machine continues to reinforce the delusional official line from on high. For decades, the sinister world cabal operated in the shadows of secrecy and disinformation. The timely analogy is the initial way the disgraced Anthony Weiner responded to his self-inflicted indiscretion. Ignore any rogue inquiry about the nature of their agenda or plots on forthcoming plans. High-handedness is the hallmark of their demeanor, just as arrogance is the basic character component of this pit-bull Congressional egomaniac.

By: Videos

The West Is Trapped In By Own Propaganda / Politics / Mainstream Media

By: Paul_Craig_Roberts

One of the wishes that readers often express to me came true today (May 11).  I was on the mainstream media.  It was a program with a worldwide reach--the BBC World Service.  There were others on the program as well, and the topic was Hillary Clinton’s remarks (May 10) about the lack of democracy and human rights in China.
