Who Has Shaped the World the Most? The Dozen Greatest Achievers / Politics / Education

By: Stephen_Merrill

As tough Teddy Roosevelt famously said more than hundred years ago:

“It is not the critic who counts; …. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, …. who does actually strive to do the deeds …. who .... best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement ....”

Who have been the top movers and shakers prevailing in the global arena?

It is a lasting result that counts the most in achieving things in broad social terms. Never great style only, ala JFK. Seldom genius alone, at least in things social.

GCSE Exam Results 2017, Silverdale School, Sheffield - Adnaan's Story / Politics / Education

By: N_Walayat

It's GCSE results day today, so 16 year olds across England and Wales will have been busy popping down to their secondary schools to find out if they managed to get their requisite GCSE grades for the courses they intend enrolling on for September start.

Overall minimum pass grades awarded of C/4 are marginally down on last year by 0.6% to 72%. Whilst a C is a pass, given the competition to get accepted on courses then the ultimate objectives are to achieve the A* and 9 grades for selected subjects. So if a student is choosing to enrol on 3 A-levels in September than objective would be to achieve 3 A*'s in those 3 chosen subjects as a sign of having the capability in achieving a similar grade at A level.

Revolutionize School Education Globally with ‘Dynamic School Knowledge Banks’ / Politics / Education

By: Dr_R_M_Mathew

Out of millions of students enrolled in thousands of schools every year globally, a few thousand students alone are lucky to have the best schools and best teachers and the others are spoiled without the required Skills, Expertise, Knowledge and Motivation though spend a lot of money, efforts and time . No school is rich enough to engage the Master Teachers and Great Scholars for each and every lesson taught in the classrooms. Half of the children do not have any access to schools and teachers worldwide.  If we follow the conventional mode of education, it may take at least one hundred years to establish schools for all children in the world.

Ron Paul Warns Education is Too Important Not to Leave to the Marketplace / Politics / Education

By: Dr_Ron_Paul

This week, events around the country will highlight the importance of parental control of education as part of National School Choice Week. This year's events should attract more attention than prior years because of the growing rebellion against centralized education sparked by the federal Common Core curriculum.

The movement against Common Core has the potential to change American education. However, anti-Common Core activists must not be misled by politicians promoting "reforms" of the federal education bureaucracy, or legislation ending Common Core while leaving all other federal education programs intact. The only way to protect American children from future Common Core-like programs is to permanently padlock the Department of Education.

The Monopoly of the Government Education Cartel / Politics / Education

By: BATR

Learning is a noble pursuit, but the ancient Greek text is one of the few places where the Socratic Method survives. Sanctioned political doctrine of required thinking is the mainstay in today’s august temples of purification. Forget about a classroom, the curriculum core of New Age studies has no room for the classics, much less instructions into the process of thinking itself. Except, of course for the need to electronically check off the loan applications and assign grants to the business office. In the end, university is big business and developing intelligent graduates happens as an afterthought, if at all.

College Degree Earnings Propaganda / Politics / Education

By: MISES

Andrew Syrios writes: It is becoming substantially less difficult these days to convince people that college is not a sure fire way to the good life. Even Paul Krugman has conceded that “it’s no longer true that having a college degree guarantees that you’ll get a good job.” You can say that again:53 percent of recent graduatesare either jobless or underemployed. Unfortunately, myths die hard. Many people still believe as Hillary Clinton once said, “Graduates from four-year colleges earn nearly an estimated one million dollars more [than high school graduates].” This may sound convincing, but this figure — based on a Census Bureau report — is about as true as it is relevant.

Government Schools Common Core Indoctrination / Politics / Education

By: BATR

Over the last half century, the public school establishment in America has achieved enormous results, if the intention was to dumb down the population. The term public is archaic, since the current age promotes an internationalist interdependency culture, where the state defines institutional roles and sanctions accepted standards. The public plays virtually no effective role in this process. For this reason the proper term to use is government indoctrination centers. Bringing back the McGuffey Readers as the alternative to the state syllabus of common core is a step in the right direction. Our Dysfunctional Public Education Is No Accident essay lays out the correct standard.

Education: Transforming The Most Unscientific And Mismanaged Industry Into A Scientific, Competitive And Learner-Friendly Industry  / Politics / Education

By: Dr_R_M_Mathew

The Lost Generation

Education is the most unscientific and mismanaged industry. For the ‘lost generation’ of the Global Economic Crisis, Education has become a necessary evil.  Without education, one’s life is doomed; life is also doomed, if one goes for education, it turns everybody a life-long debtor or at least a debtor during the prime time of the youth. The steady decline of the quality, the increasing irrelevance and the exponential rise of the social and personal cost of education have been fermenting into political upheavals and revolutions worldwide.

Ron Paul Warns the State’s Education Monopoly Increases Prices and Destroys Choice / Politics / Education

By: Dr_Ron_Paul

The free-market principle of open entry is challenged by governmental restrictions on access to consumer markets. There are many official justifications for these restrictions, but the main one is this: “Customers do not know what is good for them.” They do not know what products to buy, what prices to pay, or what arrangements to negotiate with respect to return and replacement. Customers are in fact woefully ignorant of what they really need, so the state enters the marketplace to restrict what customers are legally allowed to purchase. The idea here is that state officials know what customers really need as distinguished from what customers are willing to pay for.

Universities Are Terrified that Online competition Will Put them Out of Business / Politics / Education

By: LewRockwell

Peter G. Klein writes: Universities haven’t changed much since the Middle Ages. There is the campus with its lecture halls, dormitories, libraries, and laboratories surrounded by leafy quadrangles. Well, they’ve added giant sports complexes, gyms and swimming pools, and gourmet restaurants, but the basic layout is the same. And the production process hasn’t changed since around 1200. Professors give lectures, students read books and take notes, there are examinations and grades, along with the occasional tutoring session, and a great deal of hanky panky. The professors wear tweed jackets instead of gowns, and the students wear – well, just about anything, including pajamas – but otherwise the university remains one of society’s most conservative institutions.

First Obamacare, Next Obamaschool / Politics / Education

By: MISES

Hunter Lewis writes: The president gave a speech on August 22 in Buffalo outlining his proposal to “reform” the student loan program. He acknowledged that the program has some problems, but assured the audience they are easily fixed. Just take the principles behind Obamacare and apply them to education. The president personally “guaranteed” that his proposals would make college more affordable.

Professors and Grade Inflation - ‘A’ is for Average / Politics / Education

By: Walter_Brasch

About 1.8 million students will graduate from college this year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. At least one-third of them will graduate with honors. In some colleges, about half will be honor graduates.

It’s not that the current crop is that bright, it’s that honors is determined by grade point average. Because of runaway grade inflation, the average grade in college is now an “A.” About 43 percent of all college grades are “A”s, according to a recent study by Stuart Rojstaczer and Christopher Healy, and published in the prestigious Teachers College Record. About three-fourths of all grades are “A”s or “B”s.

Follies of Higher-Ed - Universities provide circuses but no bread / Politics / Education

By: William_Anderson

Modern American Higher Education is a PR juggernaut; a knowledge juggernaut it is not, and watching universities trying to become "relevant" often can be entertaining – if it were not so pathetic. Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton is one of those places that started small and wants to be relevant, but instead has become pitiful.

The university itself is a place that rose from tiny beginnings but now is well-known because of a couple of things. The first is for something that recently occurred in a classroom. The second is for an inexcusable act in which the university has gained a corporate sponsor that would make Blackwater look like a good choice.

The Chicago Mob Called Teachers / Politics / Education

By: Gary_North

Diamond Rated - Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleIn my previous report, "How to Break the Chicago Teachers Strike in Seven Days," I discussed the economics of the teachers union. You can read the report here.

The American Federation of Teachers is a paper tiger. The organization bases its bargaining ability on what is now a legislated restraint, namely, the shortage of teachers. There is no shortage of teachers at the wage scale that is imposed by the American Federation of Teachers on local school boards.
