Mexico’s Historical Election and Obrador’s Triumph / Politics / Mexico

By: Dan_Steinbock

For decades, the specter of Andrés Manuel López Obrador has haunted Mexico’s ruling elites. After July 1, his coalition triumph - after years of contested elections - could change the country’s domestic, regional, even international policies.

For a year or two, international media touted the neoliberal reforms of President Enrique Peña Nieto. However, as the “reform” narrative has proved hollow, Nieto’s approval rating has plunged from almost 50 percent to barely 10 percent. So the media narrative has been revised it by downplaying Nieto but focusing on the flawed portrayal of Obrador as Mexico’s Chávez who will undermine Mexico’s future.

In Mexico, Crime Is Bigger Than a Crime Boss / Politics / Mexico

By: STRATFOR

The July 11 escape of the notorious Sinaloa crime boss, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera, from a maximum-security prison in Mexico has drawn considerable Mexican and international media attention. While the brazen and elaborate nature of the escape will add to the lore already surrounding Guzman, the escape itself carries little significance for organized crime in Mexico — though it will place a momentary strain on coordination between U.S. and Mexican law enforcement. The forces that drive the evolution of organized crime and their impact on society in Mexico are simply greater than any single crime boss.

Mexico's Zetas Are Not Finished Yet / Politics / Mexico

By: STRATFOR

Scott Stewart and Tristan Reed write: During the question-and-answer portion of our quarterly Mexico Security Monitor webinar, we were asked a question pertaining to the current status of Los Zetas. The question was something to the effect of: "Some Mexican media outlets and analysts claim that Los Zetas have been dismantled as an organization and are now little more than a 'ragtag operation.' Why do you disagree with that assessment?"

This question apparently came in response to our quarterly cartel report (an abbreviated version is available here), in which we wrote that despite the leadership losses suffered by Los Zetas, including the arrest of their leader, Miguel "Z-40" Trevino Morales, there were no signs that other leaders were challenging the current leader and Miguel's brother, Omar Trevino Morales. We also wrote that we believed Los Zetas have maintained their operational capabilities in terms of drug smuggling and other criminal activity, and that they have retained the ability to defend their operations and to continue conducting offensive operations deep in their rivals' territory.

Investing in Mexico May Be Once in a 100-Year Opportunity / Companies / Mexico

By: Money_Morning

Martin Hutchinson writes: A hundred years ago Mexico was a very different place.

Believe it or not, Mexico was once a free-market beacon of rapid economic growth. It had low taxes, encouraged foreign investment and had reformed its laws to become more business-friendly.

Constraints Facing the Next Mexican President as Cartels Evolve / Politics / Mexico

By: STRATFOR

Enrique Pena Nieto will be sworn in as Mexico's next president Dec. 1. He will take office at a very interesting point in Mexican history. Mexico is experiencing an economic upturn that may become even more pronounced if Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party administration is able to work with its rivals in the National Action Party to enact needed reforms to Mexico's labor, financial and energy laws.

Mexico, the “Forgotten” Emerging Market / Economics / Mexico

By: Benjamin_Shepherd

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleMexico is the closest emerging market to the US, after all, it’s right next door but it hasn’t been getting much attention from American investors.

A major reason is Mexico’s close linkage to the economic behemoth to its north. Mexico doesn’t just catch cold when America sneezes; it comes down with a nasty case of pneumonia.

Washington Obsesses Over Syria Whilst Mexico Burns / Politics / Mexico

By: STRATFOR

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleWhile the foreign policy elite in Washington focuses on the 8,000 deaths in a conflict in Syria -- half a world away from the United States -- more than 47,000 people have died in drug-related violence since 2006 in Mexico. A deeply troubled state as well as a demographic and economic giant on the United States' southern border, Mexico will affect America's destiny in coming decades more than any state or combination of states in the Middle East. Indeed, Mexico may constitute the world's seventh-largest economy in the near future.

Investing for Mexico’s Social and Economic Collapse / Politics / Mexico

By: Sean_Brodrick

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThere is a war next door, and our neighbor may be losing. I’m talking about Mexico’s ongoing battle with violent drug gangs. The northern parts of Mexico are becoming lawless, and the drug gangs are taking steps to set themselves up as de facto governments. This could have big implications for Mexico and for its oil production. And Mexico is our number 2 supplier of imported oil.

Mexico in Crisis, The Struggle for Balance / Politics / Mexico

By: STRATFOR

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThis week’s Geopolitical Intelligence Report provided a high-level assessment of the economic forces that affect how the Mexican people and the Mexican government view the flow of narcotics through that country. Certainly at that macro level, there is a lot of money flowing into Mexico and a lot of people, from bankers and businessmen to political parties and politicians, are benefiting from the massive influx of cash. The lure of this lucre shapes how many Mexicans (particularly many of the Mexican elite) view narcotics trafficking. It is, frankly, a good time to be a banker, a real estate developer or a Rolex dealer in Mexico.

Workers, Socialization of Banking Debts and Crisis in Mexico / Politics / Mexico

By: Global_Research

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThomas Marois writes: A striking feature of the global financial crisis is the narrow and technical focus on banks and financial corporations without accounting for ordinary workers in these institutions and in society more broadly. Yet through the intensification of work, workers have also underwritten the profitability of finance. This has been generally ignored.

Mexico At War with the Drug Cartels / Politics / Mexico

By: STRATFOR

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThere are two cartel wars currently raging in Mexico that have combined to produce record levels of violence in 2009. The first war is the struggle between the government of Mexico and the drug cartels. The second, a parallel war, is the fight among the various cartels as they compete for control of lucrative supply routes. Shortly after his inauguration in December 2006, President Felipe Calderon launched an all-out effort to target the cartels, which he viewed as a major threat to Mexico’s security and stability.

According to corporate consultant AlixPartners, Mexico has leapfrogged China to be ranked as the cheapest country in the world for companies looking to manufacture products for the U.S. market. India is now No. 2, followed by China and then Brazil.
