“One swallow does not a summer make”. (Aristotle) That may be true, but it’s possible that I saw two swallows today, and “summer” is not the season occupying my mind at present.
First, there were reports from across the Northern Hemisphere (USA, Canada, Europe and China) that the sudden cold weather “shouldn’t” be as cold as is being experienced. Commentators are clearly surprised by the ferocity of the savagely cold weather in an era of so-called “man-made global warming”.

Current Position of the Market
SPX: Long-term trend - Down! The very-long-term cycles have taken over earlier than anticipated and if they
make their lows when expected, the bear market which started in October 2007 should continue until 2012-
2014. This would imply that much lower prices lie ahead.
SPX: Intermediate trend - An intermediate low may have been reached in November, but this remains to be confirmed. There is good possibility that January 2009 will bring a new low, or at least a test of the lows.

Global stock markets rallied for a second consecutive day after the US government agreed to rescue the beleaguered Citigroup (C) and as President-elect Obama introduced his administration's new economic team, emphasizing the need for quick action to hasten an economic recovery and signaling that he may be willing to keep at bay higher taxes for the wealthy.
The MSCI Word Index has improved by 10.1% since the start of trading last Friday, whereas the MSCI Emerging Markets Index lagged somewhat and registered a more modest gain of 4.6%.

RSI reading of a "healthy" oversold reading currently at 15.1 had not been
this far beneath the 25% oversold demarcation line since the October 1974
reading of 13.3. At 2:30 pm Eastern, with the SPX at 754.17, I noted to
our subscribers that the 13-month vicious bear market has created conditions
similar to the most acutely bullish readings in the past 35 years --
creating a potentially explosive technical setup for a recovery rally phase
in the SPX.

Another very negative day on the Street as the bear market continues in earnest. Despite the fact that futures were down for most of the pre-market, they ended up opening firm and rallying back to initial resistance. When they couldn't break through they sold off sharply to retest yesterday afternoon's lows, backed and filled for several hours and on three different occasions ran right up to initial resistance but once again couldn't get through.
