Stock Markets Staring into the Abyss / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Colin_Twiggs

Diamond Rated - Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThe Paradox Of Thrift - A common topic of discussion in the media is the paradox of thrift — a term coined by John Maynard Keynes to describe the negative effect of increased savings on consumption. When threatened by recession we tend to consume less and save more. Keynes argued that the decrease in consumption has the effect of lengthening the recession. While accepted by many economists, this reasoning has a basic flaw. It assumes that savings and investment are independent of each other. In an ideal market-driven financial system, the two are directly linked, with savings financing new investment. An increase in savings would mean that interest rates are likely to fall. Falling interest rates would encourage new investment, more than offsetting the initial reduction in consumption.

Stocks Bear Market is Not Over More Selling Expected / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Mike_Paulenoff

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleReviewing the big-picture, monthly S&P 500 chart, let's notice that the monthly momentum (RSI) confirmed this month's (Oct '08) plunge and remains pointed straight down, which argues that the low has not yet been established. While the SPX -- and its corresponding ETF, the S&P 500 Depository Receipts (AMEX: SPY) -- could rally a bit more based on my nearer-term oversold work, perhaps into the 1040-1060 area, the overall chart structure suggests very strongly that thereafter we should expect another vicious period of selling pressure that drives the SPX beneath the 2002 low at 768.60 prior to the emergence of a sustainable "bullish" period.

Stocks Bear Market Worst is Likely Behind Us / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: John_Derrick

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleTo get some perspective on the current market conditions, it may be helpful to look at what some bear markets of the past have looked like.

Below is a chart that goes back to 1940, and you can see that what we've recently gone through was the second-worst five-day period of time over the last 68 years. It was essentially a market crash. The only other thing that's really even close was the crash of 1987.

Interest Rate Conundrum Heralds More Stock Market Distress / Interest-Rates / Stocks Bear Market

Diamond Rated - Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleMike Larson writes: Step into my interest rate time machine for a minute, if you will. We're going back to February 16, 2005 — the day former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan testified before the Senate Banking Committee.

The topic of the day was the broader economy.

Stock Market Bottoms Following the Mother of All Rallies / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Harry_Boxer

It was the mother of all rallies today, as the indices exploded in the afternoon after backing and filling all day, holding support. The indices took off in mid-afternoon and rallied strongly into the close, with as strong a thrust as we've ever seen.

The Dow exploded to over 900 at one point, closing up 889 on the day. The S&P 500 ran from 860 to 940, 80 points in the last 2 hours, closing up 91 1/2. And the NDX ran from 1190 to 1290, more than 100 points actually, closing up almost 128. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOXX) jumped nearly 20 and gained around 9% today.

Stock Markets Discounting Recessionary Fears / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Paul_J_Nolte

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleIs October over yet?? The markets are down over 25% for the month, however on the four up days that actually did occur during the month, the indexes managed to gain over 20% - just image the carnage without the those fabulous four days! Liquidations by both mutual and hedge funds have made the last hour of trading something of an art form as investors guess whether the markets will tack on or drop a few hundred points. The recessionary fears of just a month ago have now morphed into full-blown depression fears and not just here, but around the world. The historic market declines to this point likely have already captured much of the economic pain we will experience in the weeks/months ahead.

Stock Market Bottom Near? We Don't Think So / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Richard_Shaw

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleMarket timing is not a good idea, but standing aside when a global train wreck is happening in proportions that rival the worst periods in modern history is not market timing — it is self-preservation.

Being out of the market makes deciding how to re-enter problematic, and some opportunity could be missed, but far greater opportunity is missed if capital is destroyed.

October 20th , 2008 Issue #34 Vol. 2

Financial crashes and panics tend to breed great investment opportunities!

This article seeks to formulate a bear market accumulation investment strategy following the recent stock market falls that have taken stock prices down far beyond 30% off of their highs set a year ago, even the ongoing bounce still leaves the major western stock indices more than 30% off their highs.

Sell into the Stocks Bear Market Rally / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: David_Petch

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleAnalysis of the S&P 500 Index is presented today, with a slight tweaking of the Elliott Wave count. I have spent a big chunk of time reviewing the $CPC chart posted yesterday, along with the wave structure and am confident the described pattern is what will play out. There is a tradable bottom 1-2 weeks out, but a low should be established by mid to late week. Expect basing for 1-2 weeks before commencing a multi-month rally that should last until March or April 2009 (if the partial retracement is extremely rapid, then late December becomes the target).

Where The Heck Is The Stock Market Bottom? / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Ronald_R_Cooke

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleA Logical Conclusion - One can make a case that sometime in 2010 our stock markets will “bottom out”. In this scenario, the DOW will decline below 5700 and the NASDAQ will fall under 430, after 33 to 35 months of highly volatile trading.

How did I reach this conclusion? Read on.

Stock Market Will Bottom Well Before the Economy / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Chris_Ciovacco

Diamond Rated - Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleInvesting is really about risk management. When the odds are favorable, you expose some of your capital to the risk of loss in search of possible gains. The best time to invest is when both the technicals (charts) and fundamentals (valuations, future earning potential, etc.) are favorably aligned. There has never been and there never will be a time where the techncials and fundamentals are perfectly aligned, which is another way of saying there is always some form of risk in any financial market. It is simply the degree of risk which fluctuates.

Fed Fighting to Prevent 1930's Style Financial and Economic Deflation / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Tim_Wood

Diamond Rated - Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleIt Still Ain't Gonna Work Plus A Quick Technical Look at Gold - As the market declined into the 2002 low we began to see more manipulation and efforts to hold the market up than ever before. In the wake of these desperately irresponsible acts, interest rates declined, the money supply expanded, banks embarked on ridiculously irresponsible lending practices and the housing bubble was born as was the commodity bubble. These acts by the Fed were a deliberate attempt to hold back the deflationary wrath of Kondratieff Winter, which is all about the purging of excess credit from the system. So, what do the geniuses in charge do? They promote more credit. Now that really makes sense doesn't it? Just as the economic cycle was trying to naturally deflate and purge itself of the credit excesses in 2001 and 2002, the brainiacs in charge stepped in and flooded the economy with more of what was ailing it. Credit.
