Hong King Kong / Politics / Hong Kong

By: Raul_I_Meijer

Of course the notion of addressing Hong Kong has been in my mind for a while, but it’s a bit of a moving target: things change all the time, and seemingly on the fly. However, with today’s fresh developments, it seems silly to wait any longer. Hong Kong Civic party lawmaker Dennis Kwok yesterday expressed the reason way better than I could:

As I said time and again, the use of troops in Hong Kong will be the end of Hong Kong, and I would warn against any such move on the part of the central people’s government.”

He said that before today’s arrests -and subsequent release on bail- of a handful of alleged protest leaders Joshua Wong, Andy Chan, and Agnes Chow. Who, if you read between the lines, didn’t lead much of anything; they may be figure-heads, but that’s not the same thing. The protests are either lacking leaders or everyone’s a leader, depending on who you ask. So why arrest them to begin with? You tell me.

The Hong Kong Dollar, Rock Solid / Currencies / Hong Kong

By: Steve_H_Hanke

The currency speculators are restless, again. Many, like George Soros and Kyle Bass, are reportedly taking aim at the Hong Kong dollar (HKD). HKD bear circles think China’s renmimbi (RMB) will lose value against the U.S. dollar (USD) as China’s economy slows down and capital flight from China continues. This, it is asserted, will put pressure on the HKD, and force its devaluation. Thus rendering the fixed rate of 7.8 HKD/USD null and void, and pumping profits into the pockets of those who bet on a devaluation of the HKD.

Investor Profit Opportunity in Hong Kong's Unrest / Stock-Markets / Hong Kong

By: Money_Morning

Keith Fitz-Gerald writes: Most investors haven't got a clue about what Hong Kong's riots represent, let alone the investment potential that's being unleashed there. As a result, they're going to miss out on some really terrific profit opportunities.

Hong Kong is like an onion. Returned from a century of British rule to Beijing on June 30, 1997, there are layers and layers of subtleties. For most westerners, the place is a complete enigma.

Hong Kong’s Battle for Democracy, Beijing’s War Against It / Politics / Hong Kong

By: Submissions

Ted Baumann writes: One spring day in 1988, I stood in a crowd of thousands of young people. Over us hovered helicopters; in front of us stood armed riot police. We sought democracy. The power of the state sought to deny it to us, with pepper spray, batons and rubber bullets. Unstoppable force met immovable object. Friction ensued, with all its heat and light. I can still perceive its imprint in my mind’s eye.

The first years of the 21st century have seen this drama repeated on every continent. Yugoslavia in 2000. Georgia in 2003. Ukraine in 2004. Lebanon and Kyrgyzstan, 2005. The Arab Spring of 2001. Venezuela in 2013.

Bernanke and Pinball Could Learn A Lot From Hong Kong’s Property Bubble / Housing-Market / Hong Kong

By: Andrew_Butter

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleMany years ago I met an old sweat Brit from Hong Kong, he told me two things (1) Hong Kong is the closest you will ever get to a pure free-market economy (2) that’s because it’s regulated.

He was absolutely right, it’s funny how health services, education and public utilities in Hong Kong are the best in the world and everything works, yet you step back and for a second you would think it’s a socialist dream. It’s not, it’s Adam Smith on Speed.

Investing in Hong Kong Stock Market instead of China / Stock-Markets / Hong Kong

By: Money_and_Markets

Tony Sagami writes: Celebrating China in Hong Kong - Although we're just getting ready to fire up our grills and shoot off our fireworks here in the U.S., there was a huge celebration in Hong Kong two nights ago. The occasion? The tenth anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong to Chinese rule. It was a day of elaborate festivities, including a visit from Chinese President Hu Jintao.

The Chinese dubbed the ceremonies the "Celebration of the 10th Anniversary of Hong Kong's Return to the Glorious Motherland." But the most widely used title is " Chat Yat ," which is Cantonese for 7/1.
