Savers Wait for a Miracle as the Savings Market Stagnates / Personal_Finance / Savings Accounts

By: MoneyFacts

The savings market has suffered considerably over the past few years thanks to lending initiatives and a low bank base rate, and the latest research from Moneyfacts.co.uk shows that savings rates have been on a clear downward trajectory as a result.

Since 2011, the average rate on a two-year fixed bond has almost halved, down from 3.20% five years ago to just 1.72% today. A similar pattern can be seen on longer-term bonds, with five-year fixed rates recording a drop from 4.01% to just 2.59% over the same period. Easy access deals have not been left unscathed from poor returns either, with a staggering 75% of the market paying 1% or less.

The International War on Cash / Personal_Finance / War on Cash

By: Casey_Research

By Jeff Thomas

Back in 2008, I began warning of increasing capital controls that we would see in the future, as a component in the decline of Western economies (Western in the broad sense, including Japan, Australia, etc.)

Along the way, it occurred to me that, at some point, governments might collectively attempt to eliminate paper currency in favour of an electronic currency - transferred from party to party solely through licensed banks. Sound farfetched? Well, maybe, but what if the U.S. and EU agreed on an overall plan, then suggested it to other governments? On the face of it, this smacks of conspiracy theory, yet certainly, all governments would benefit from this control and would be likely to get on board. In fact, it might prove to be the only way out of their present economic problems.

Another Poor Year for UK Annuity Rates / Personal_Finance / Pensions & Retirement

By: MoneyFacts

New research from Moneyfacts has revealed that 2015 was another poor year for annuity rates as low gilts, uncertainty created by the new pension freedoms and preparations for Solvency II took their toll.

Annuity rates have more than halved since 1994

The research found that annuity rates in 2015 fell for the second year running, and have now declined in 17 out of the 21 calendar years since Moneyfacts started surveying the annuity market in 1994. During this period the average annual income payable from a standard level without guarantee annuity has fallen by a considerable 56%.

The Big Short Movie Review / Personal_Finance / Reviews

By: James_Quinn

"The truth is like poetry, and most people ***** hate poetry."

The Big Short opens nationwide today. But it happened to have one showing last night at a theater near me. My youngest son and I hopped in the car and went to see it. I loved the book by Michael Lewis. The cast assembled for the movie was top notch, but having the director of Anchorman and Talledaga Nights handle a subject matter like high finance seemed odd.
