Looking at the “New NAFTA” Trade Agreement / Stock-Markets / Global Economy

By: Rodney_Johnson

Well, this is getting exciting!

We just got an agreement this morning with Canada and Mexico to replace NAFTA, which has driven the markets higher.

I thought the Trump-induced trade war with China would have resolved by now as well. At the beginning of the summer I forecast that the president would talk big, beat on a couple of trade partners with some tariffs, then quickly reach a negotiated truce and claim victory.

It hasn’t turned out that way.

One More Bounce for the Gold Price / Commodities / Gold and Silver 2018

By: Harry_Dent

You know by now that I think gold is above all a commodity, and in a bubble that was more extreme than stocks… a bubble that’s been bursting since September 2011, but…

Gold and bitcoin are two examples of bubbles bursting that are NOT following my bubble model as well as most. Both, thus far, are basing out at higher levels than I expected.

Where Have the Affordable Homes Gone? / Housing-Market / US Housing

By: Harry_Dent

Bubbles are self-defeating. Their success is what eventually kills them.

The same is true for cycles.

Take the urbanization cycle for example…

As a population urbanizes, people get wealthier. But more affluent urbanites have fewer kids and that slows future demographic growth for the next generation.

Impact of FOBT Regulation: Online Gaming Shares / Companies / Gambling

By: Submissions

Fixed odds betting terminals (FOBTs) have become a hot topic for UK gaming operators over the last two years. Following protests by anti-gambling advocates, the government initiated a full review of the betting shop gaming machines at the end of 2017. At the heart of the debate was the amount players were able to bet. Under the regulations at the time, players could wager a maximum of £100 per round.

How Commodities Will Perform in the 'Impending Massive Credit Crunch' / Commodities / Commodities Trading

By: Clive_Maund

Technical analyst Clive Maund looks at the factors that he sees are behind a massive credit crunch and discusses how the markets could react. An enormous "sword of Damocles" hangs over all markets now. A massive liquidity drain is underway as global QE reverses into QT and rates rise against the background of immense ubiquitous crippling debt burdens. What this means is that the biggest credit crunch of all time is bearing down on us, which will involve markets crashing in the absence of bids, serious dislocation of capital markets and out of control interest rates.

This is probably the high point for Trump's presidency as the stock market enjoys its final "swansong rally" ahead of the crash, buoyed up the last of the stock buybacks before rising rates choke them off, and the dumbest of the dumb money who think that because the market has been in an uptrend for years it's going to continue.

Gold Stocks Recovering / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2018

By: Zeal_LLC

The battered gold miners’ stocks are finally starting to recover after a rough few months.  Their prices slid with gold in July, plummeted in a brutal forced capitulation in August, and then dropped again in an echo capitulation into mid-September.  That left them at fundamentally-absurd price levels wildly disconnected from their actual profitability, leaving this sector with big mean-reversion upside ahead as it bounces back.

The leading gold-stock investment vehicle and increasingly benchmark is the GDX VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF.  As of this week it still had $8.5b of net assets even at today’s super-depressed gold-stock prices.  That dwarfs everything else in the 1x-long major-gold-miners ETF space, running 40.5x bigger than its next largest competitor!  So GDX is the dominant proxy for the fortunes of the gold miners’ stocks.

Prepare for a Gold/Silver Rally / Commodities / Gold and Silver 2018

By: Chris_Vermeulen

Our modeling systems are suggesting that Gold and Silver will begin a new upside rally very quickly. We wrote about how our modeling systems are suggesting this upside move could be a tremendous opportunity for investors over 2 weeks ago. Our initial target is near the $1245 level and our second target is near the $1309 level. Recent lows help to confirm this upside projection as the most recent low prices created a price rotation that supports further upside price action. What is needed right now is a push above $1220 before we begin to see the real acceleration higher.

More Evidence Of Manipulation In The Gold Market / Commodities / Gold and Silver 2018

By: Avi_Gilburt

This past week, we saw that the Bank of Nova Scotia was charged by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission with multiple acts of spoofing in gold and silver futures between June 2013 and June 2016. Traders placed orders to buy or sell precious metals futures contracts with the intent to cancel the orders before execution, the CFTC said.

So, the tin-foil hat wearers are back out in full force screaming about how this market rigging has caused gold to collapse over the last seven years. Unfortunately, anyone who believes this is simply not dealing with the facts of any of the supposed “manipulation” cases. You see, believing that these manipulation cases caused the gold market to drop from is 2011 high is no different from believing that a paper cut can cause someone to bleed to death.

Sheffield Best Secondary School Places 2018 League Tables Analysis / Local / Sheffield

By: N_Walayat

It's the time of the year when Sheffield's parents and students will have been busy visiting Sheffield's secondary school open days as they attempt to determine the best schools to apply to in the countdown to the 18th October online noon deadline and 31st October paper deadline for secondary school place applications with offers announced on 1st of March 2019. However, the school league tables can prove misleading as many of Sheffield's 38 or so secondary schools for whatever reason tend to exhibit volatility in performance from year to year. Therefore schools that currently rank high may rank lower in subsequent years i.e. by the time today's Year 7's progress to Year 11 GCSE exams.

As you would recall, I said in late-September that the stock market’s volatility would probably spike in October. Volatility was extremely compressed, which set the stage for an expansion in vol.

Yesterday, the stock market went down and volatility spiked a little.

Chinese Credit Collapse Is Imminent / Interest-Rates / China Debt Crisis

By: John_Mauldin

Many good things are happening in China.

Businesses are prospering. Living standards rise. The country’s interior is still quite poor but life is improving.

This progress is welcome news. The problem is how China is financing it. The answer is, “with a lot of debt.”

You often hear about China’s government and corporate debt, but less about households.

SPX/Gold Ratio, Long-term Yields & Yield Curve / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2018

By: Gary_Tanashian

It has been a long while since the last Amigos update because frankly if the characters, images and shticks I invent to portray market status begin to wear on me sometimes I have to believe they may do the same to you. Consider that the 3 Amigos, SPX/Gold Ratio, Long-term Yields and the Yield Curve are slow movers that we usually view from monthly chart perspectives and well, sometimes you need to take a break and just let them do their thing over time.

USD Lifted by Data and Fed Chair Powell’s Remarks / Currencies / US Dollar

By: Submissions

The US dollar outperformed all its major peers yesterday following solid economic data and hawkish remarks by Fed Chair Jerome Powell. Italian assets were supported by the reports that Italy’s government is planning to scale back its deficit targets for 2020 and 2021, while in the UK, PM May’s speech did not result in any major market reaction.

Dollar and Tr. Yields Surge on Upbeat US Data and Powell’s Comments

The dollar managed to outperform all the other G10 currencies on Wednesday. It gained the most against NZD, AUD and NOK, while the currencies against which it gained the least were GBP and CAD.

Stock Market’s Breadth is Weak: Stocks Will Crash! Just Kidding / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2018

By: Troy_Bombardia

We’ve done 2 kinds of stock market studies recently.

  1. The U.S. stock market’s own price action.
  2. The U.S. stock market’s breadth.

Market studies related to the stock market’s own price action have mostly been bullish.

Market studies related to the stock market’s breadth have been mixed. Some are bullish, while others are very bearish.

So what gives? Why are some breadth studies so bearish? (e.g. Hindenburg Omen)

Why Expanding Places at Sheffield's Best Secondary Schools is a Recipe for Disaster / Local / Sheffield

By: N_Walayat

It's that time of the year again when Sheffield's parents and students have been busy visiting Sheffield's secondary school open days as they attempt to determine the best school to apply for in the countdown to the 14th October online deadline and 31st October paper deadline. Gold Miners Inverse Head and Shoulders Pattern? Really? / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2018

By: P_Radomski_CFA

Gold rallied, silver rallied, and mining stocks rallied. That’s how one can summarize yesterday’s session. The volume was huge, so it appears that a major upswing has just begun. But is this really the case? As always, just because things look encouraging and the emotions are high, it doesn’t mean that anything changed. One needs to step back from the day-to-day price and volume changes and look at the factors that are in place right now without any biases. No hopes, no “feelings toward the market”, and no worries about missing the boat. Just facts and logic. Let’s start with gold (charts courtesy of http://stockcharts.com).
